Salvation Army emergency assistance programs Big Stone Gap, Wise, Lee County area.

The Salvation Army of Big Stone Gap operates a worship and social service center in the City of Norton, Lee, and Wise County community. It is a place for the less fortunate to go to for help, whether for assistance with bills, a meal, rent, substance abuse, or even just non-judgmental case management. The center also provides opportunities for people to volunteer at a thrift store or donate clothing, groceries, and other items.

The support is for residents ranging from newborns to senior citizens. They also help immigrants, the disabled, unemployed, drug addicts, Spanish speakers and anyone going through a difficult time. Various programs may be available depending on the applicant's need and resource levels.

Counseling and case management programs

Intensive case management is organized by the Big Stone Gap Salvation Army. Staff will partner with the client on the creation of a comprehensive case plan which addresses each and every challenge. There is support in applying for government benefits (such as SSI disability or food stamps), skill-building classes and also referrals to nearby resources.

If applicable, the Salvation Army is involved in the coordination of mental health, emergency medial and drug as well as substance addiction counseling services. This can help the underinsured or those from Wise County and City of Norton that just need support in dealing with substance abuses.

Free food and financial aid from Salvation Army

When facing hunger, the Big Stone Gap Salvation Army soup kitchen and a food pantry can be used. It operates year round and can address short term needs while the family seeks or is waiting on longer term support, such as from SNAP food stamps. When qualified, the pantry can only be used quarterly and families can't drop in every day to get assistance.

The cupboards at the pantry may have many items for distribution. Not only may there be food, but also personal hygiene items, household supplies, paper goods, and more may be offered. There may be groceries such as Canned Meats (Tuna, Ham, Chicken), Dried Beans, Juices, Vegetables, Cereal, Rice,  Pasta, and baby formula. Others goods from the pantry may be passed out. Or clients can learn about Virginia public food assistance programs.

When it comes to a crisis, referrals to, or direct financial assistance, may be an option. Everything from help for rent to utility programs or a ride to a job interview may be offered. When the family is too far behind to be assisted, or if the Big Stone Gap or Wise County Salvation Army can't help, then the other solutions such as shelter or transitional housing are used.

Some financial relief may be for addressing disasters too. This is a key role of the Salvation Army, and they provide food, vouchers, new clothing, and more. The bill paying programs to those impacted by a disaster can help them through a difficult period.

The vulnerable in Big Stone Gap, Wise and Lee County are also key beneficiaries of the non-profit charity. This group is wide ranging and includes groups from seniors to veterans, single moms, or the disabled. Often an individual may be living on a fixed or limited income. Or they have other conditions, such as a disability, that requires their income to go towards paying medical bills. In these instances the charity will try to support them.

Seniors can request a home delivered meal from a Salvation Army volunteer. There are also Christmas programs tailored for them where they can get a small gift and a meal with their peers. When it comes to lower income single moms, their children may be referred to a summer day camp service by the City of Norton area Salvation Army or even provided with diapers or a free crib for a newborn.

Veterans that are homeless are also priorities. There are shelters and transitional housing services administered for their needs. They combine a place to stay as well as case management services, such as information on job placement. Referrals can also be given to VA health care plans or intake sites to apply for a grant. Staff work to assist those that have served our nation, and both veterans or their families may be supported.

During the holidays and back to school shopping season, the Big Stone Gap Salvation Army will help children as well as the elderly. There are some seasonal assistance programs that are used for this need. They include Angel Tree or Adopt a Family. Local churches, businesses, and fund raisers are used to gather items from the community.

What may be provided to a qualified applicant (child) may be clothing, games, educational or learning supplies, new toys, and much more. The parent can request what a child may need at Christmas, and if and when possible, it may be offered in the Salvation Army.
