Washington County Rhode Island Salvation Army assistance programs.

Children and families can get help from the North Kingstown based Salvation Army center. The location not only helps families in the town, but provide assistance across all of Washington County Rhode Island as well. The charity provides support for adults, children from low income families, and really the entire household.

There are a few different regional shelters throughout Washington County and nearby towns that the Salvation Army can refer people too. There is short term assistance (such as hot meals, clothing, and hygiene supplies) given to the client at most facilities. However they are also effective at directing clients to long term permanent housing, including help them find and apply to first months rent or security deposit programs. The shelters even help with daycare if the guest has a kid.

Appointments can be made at Washington County food pantries that the Salvation Army is involved in. This is part of their hunger prevention, or relief, programs. They will provide free groceries or hygiene supplies for families in need. There are also supplies for children, seniors, and volunteers who may deliver free food or a hot meal to a senior citizen or the homebound.

Many of the holiday programs in North as well as South Kingstown, as well as throughout the county, are run by the Salvation Army. There are holiday meals and food baskets, free Christmas gifts from Adopt a Family or Angel Tree, and nursing home visitations. There is an application process needed, including ID and proof of number of people in the household.

For residents that are in desperate need of help around the Thanksgiving or Christmas season, they may be giving more than food or a toy. Some families may be given some direct financial aid or even gift cards. This form of help can pay for everything from a heating bill to keep the home warm, rent, or a gift card for shopping for critical food or household supplies. So the Washington County Rhode Island Salvation Army adopt a family program can even be expanded further.

Senior citizens and veterans are always a focus of this Salvation Army center as well as many others. With the number of people over the age of 55 continuing to grow year over year, social workers can give them food, help veterans locate housing, or even apply for grants from VA benefits. Any senior citizen or veteran still needs to apply for financial help, but they can be given priority when qualified.

The case management process from the North Kingstown Salvation Army is focused on adults. They can be referred to everything from job training or placement services. If the household has children, then they can ever learn about services for them, such as free day care services. All of these case management services are combined to end poverty in the region.

Salvation Army Family Store in Washington County

This may be the most widely used service in the region. The thrift store is based in North Kingstown Rhode Island. It not only sells supplies to the community, but the Washington County center also raises money for the other Salvation Army program. In other words, everywhere something is sold at the Family Store, those dollars are “recycled” into social services. That money then pays for housing, rent or energy programs, food, vouchers, and much more.

What may be sold depends on what is donated. It can be possible to find everything from clothes to furniture to maybe even the occasional antique. On a daily basis, the family store may sell gently used furniture such as beds or cribs, clothing for work or school, car seats, cribs, bedding, and many more items.

For more information on the Washington County Salvation Army, the store as well as main social service center is at 6835 Post Road, North Kingstown, RI 02852. Call the location at (401) 884-4283.
