Free air conditioner in Tennessee

There are charities as well as government programs in Tennessee that provide free air conditioners to low-income families along with funds to pay for summer electric bills. While most of the assistance is for the Nashville and Memphis region, there are other programs available in some cities. Find details below on how to get a free air conditioner in TN.

Not only will a free unit be given out to qualified low income families, but there are also programs that will help pay for the repairs to an AC unit. Or get money, such as from LIHEAP, to pay for increased utility bills that are the result of summer heat. The point being a number of resources are available across Tennessee to help seniors, families with young kids and others to either get an air conditioner (or window fan) or pay the bills to run them.

Charity organizations that provide free air conditioners or window fans

There are a few organizations that cover the major cities in TN, including Knoxville, Memphis and Nashville. Note the amount of assistance available is limited and a free air conditioner provided will often be a window unit. In addition, there will be priority for the elderly who are at risk from extreme heat or humidity. Another focus is on low-income families with young kids (infant, newborns, etc.) as well as those people with a medical issue.

Free small, portable air conditioners are available in Davidson County from the Metropolitan Action Commission. Most of the units are given out in the city of Nashville. The non-profit tries to help people who are at risk, and the window AC units are provided along with other support such as access to a cooling center, grant money, food and more. Shelby County Community Services Agency provides financial help with bills, including for air conditioners or electric. There are grants or free AC or fans given out in the city of Memphis and county. The non-profit is part of the TN community action network and is based at 1188 Minna Pl, Memphis, TN 38104. As part of this, families with little or no money, and that meet poverty guidelines can apply for free air conditioner for their home or apartment. Or if a unit needs emergency repairs, a fan can be provided or the non-profit will try to offer funds to repair or replace it. Call (901) 222-4200

The city of Knoxville and suburbs are supported by the Knox County Community Action agency. The working poor, low-income and those at risk of heat can get help. Programs range from free AC units to a window fan, emergency cooling center, transportation to a shelter and more. The location is 2400 Piedmont St NW, Knoxville, TN 37921, and for details dial (865) 546-3500.

A free widow air conditioner and/or fan is available for senior citizens and the disabled in Tennessee. The non-profit Area Agency on Aging Centers coordinate this type of relief. However, this is focused on vulnerable elderly people over the age of 60 and disabled only. Locate TN Area Agency on Aging programs.

Government programs in TN for free air conditioners

The state does have a summer cooling bill assistance program as part of LIHEAP. While this is a year round service for seniors and the low-income in Tennessee, there are additional funds provided during the April to August time frame, and that money can pay for a small air conditioner. Or the funds can pay to fix a broken air conditioner or to pay the utility bills to run it. Continue with LIHEAP for the low income in TN.

In addition, the programs from LIHEAP are combined with weatherization. This will offer everything from repairs to an AC unit to a fix to a broken window during the summer, extra insulation and more. This government program also helps the working poor and elderly stay cool during the summer.

Homeless prevention organizations, in partnership with local and state government offices, help the very low-income stay cool, and part of this are free fans or air conditioners. There are also cooling stations for the homeless in TN. All of these options combine government resources with some support from other groups. The options include Nashville’s Office of Homeless Services (call (615) 862-6400), Memphis Homeless options (dial (901) 527-1302) and the Knoxville Office on Homelessness (call 865-215-4211).
