Salvation Army Family Services and the Family (thrift) Store help the community in Sussex County Delaware. The Christian faith church based charity may offer financial help for paying rent, water or utility bills or vouchers (for hotels or gasoline) as well as many other services. This may include, but is not limited too, a free food pantry; free Christmas toys or Thanksgiving meals; clothes; substance abuse support; school supplies; a homeless shelter and so much more in Seaford and Georgetown.

The charity is based at the location noted below. This is also where the low cost thrift store in Seaford is located. The Salvation Army in Sussex County will generally provide financial help to qualified low income families or those in a crisis. As far as low cost goods from the Family Store, those are available to anyone in the Sussex County community.

Free items or Thrift Store programs in Sussex County

These types of programs are more generally offered in the community. Most rely on donations as well as volunteers from the Sussex  County Delaware community. But when possible, and when donations and volunteers allow, the Salvation Army may offer the following.

-Thrift or Family Store is where gently used items are sold from. Clothes, electronics, vintage goods, furniture, kitchen supplies, and so much more.
-Christmas assistance includes meals, free Christmas gifts from Angel Tree, and companionship for the lonely or elderly.
-Free Thanksgiving turkey dinners and meals are served.
- Georgetown  and Sussex County families fleeing a disaster, or women (and children) fleeing domestic violence can get free stuff too. Clothes, furniture for a new home, food, hot meals, and more.
-During the summer and fall months, the Sussex County Salvation Army passes out free back to school supplies. Pens, pencils, backpacks, notebooks, tables, shoes for kids and more.

Free food and meals are also offered by the Sussex County Delaware Salvation Army client choice food pantry as well as soup kitchen. There may be groceries (canned or fresh), breakfast or lunches, holiday meals served, and even visits to residents who are in a nursing home or hospital. The Salvation Army combines the short term food or free meal assistance with companionship as well as long term stability.

When it comes to the free stuff, the charity will focus that form of aid on the lowest income families, those in a crisis, or people recovering from a disaster. That may be a fire, flood, or some other event. As the Salvation Army is a leading disaster response agency in both Sussex County as well as nationwide. In addition, many of the free items are seasonal.

Emergency financial help from Family Services

Salvation Army uses the funds from the sale of goods at the thrift store to provide financial aid. There are also grants from the United Way in Sussex County, the federal government, and other non-profit partner organizations. All of these sources of funding allow the Salvation Army to offer limited financial help.

When possible, there may be some emergency funds to pay for housing costs, such as rent or water bills. When it comes to heating and fuel bills, the Sussex County Salvation Army is part of Operation Share with Delaware Electric. This is a donation service that helps keep the power on in a crisis. Or find other energy bill assistance programs in Delaware.

The financial aid is limited and paid out on a case by case basis to qualified low income families in a crisis. Money or grants for bills, rent, medications, gasoline, or other living costs is limited, and often depends on the volume of sales at the Thrift Store (see above).
