Salvation Army assistance programs Sumter County Florida.

Volunteers and social workers from the Sumter County Florida Salvation Army help families living in poverty, migrant farm workers as well as people facing an emergency. The Christian, faith based groups offers both financial aid and basic needs, such as the following. There may be some or all of the following social services.

  • Free canned or fresh groceries from a food pantry.
  • Free Christmas toys from Adopt a Family and holiday meals are served.
  • Financial help for rent or paying energy bills.
  • Vouchers to a thrift store in Bushnell. Or shop for gently used goods at the Family Store.
  • Shelters and housing placement for the homeless.
  • Addiction recovery services for substance abusers.
  • Many other Salvation Army social services are available too, as below.

When seeking support from the Sumter County based agency, the staff will also offer career/financial guidance and spiritual counseling. However, this is not mandatory; it is optional for clients that want it. What will be required is that people attend the case management services that are organized by the organization.

Salvation Army Sumter County staff members will sit down and interview the client. During this timeframe, they will go over the applicant's income and expenses. There will be a review of their budget, job skills, and what is causing a hardship. A goal oriented case management plan will be put into place. Then, when resources allow, assistance provided may include the following.

Needs addressed by Salvation Army in Sumter County

There are several categories of social services, both emergency and long term. Each is contingent of the funding and resource levels. The results of the assessment done as part of case management will also be used for this. Some of these programs also rely on money being raised from churches and other partners in the region.

  • -Hunger prevention – The Salvation Army provides immediate free meals (lunches or dinners) as well as free boxes of food.
  • -Holiday assistance – This includes Easter baskets for kids, Thanksgiving turkeys, and Christmas meals, including some local deliveries.
  • -Disaster assistance – First responders and victims can get help.
  • -Energy programs – Free window fans can keep the elderly cool and clients can also receive money for paying electric or water bills.
  • -Emergency homeless shelter – The Bushnell Salvation Army will try to house the homeless, runaway teens, immigrants, and others.
  • -Rent or housing assistance – Small dollars amounts may help tenants with an eviction notice. There are also other ways to get emergency rent assistance today.
  • -Recreational activities – Seniors, children that need somewhere to go after school or during the summer, and others can enroll.
  • -Other support may be clothes, Christmas toys, and other basic needs.

The focus of the center is on stopping the crisis and getting a resident of Bushnell and the community on the path to success. While the Sumter County Salvation Army case managers will try to arrange support, this can't always be done. The fact is that at the end of the day, the individual needs to take on personal responsibility for solving their own crisis.

They need to take the often difficult steps to get back on track financially so they can afford to pay their bills or housing costs. The Salvation Army does partner with free credit counseling agencies in Florida. The Salvation Army can only provide (at best) some limited guidance and direction during this process.
