There are several government organizations, churches and charities that offer money to help with rent or a moving deposit. Many places focus on helping the families with children including single moms while others help seniors. Programs are targeted at low income, the unemployed and renters who are struggling with their bills over the short term but have long term solutions. Many of the housing and rent assistance programs may even be able to help people find a new more affordable home or no wait list apartment to move into in the St. Tammany Parish area.

Most locations in the parish do have limited funding available. Many will also have a waiting list, especially for section 8 vouchers or a free motel room. Since funding and resources are so limited, St. Tammany Parish individuals or families who are applying for help will usually need to have an eviction notice.

Family Promise is a homeless shelter for single parent families, women, single mothers and children. People leaving the shelter can get refereed to rent assistance for the move. Catholic Charities provides emergency rent assistance. The St. Tammany Parish can offer qualified lower income families and individuals a number of financial assistance programs. Limited amounts of money may be available for rent, utilities, and other housing costs. They also run a community home at the location.   • The Emergency Shelter Program, also run by Catholic Charities, is offered in the wider community to provide assistance to help move individuals/families from homelessness to self sufficiency. Among other financial resources from the program, it offers emergency shelter to first months rent help or permanent housing. Another partner organization is Hispanic Apostolate Catholic Charities (dial (504) 310-6873). This group can address emergency needs for paying rent, including housing.

Covington Housing Authority runs the section 8 rent relief voucher program for St. Tammany Parish. HUD HCV vouchers can be issued that can help pay a portion of your rent. St Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church and the Good Samaritan Society can apply emergency rent payment relief, or other financial help, at ,most one time per year. Rouquette Lodge offers help to seniors in the form of housing, rent money from the government and affordable apartments. The non-profit also works closely with Catholic Charities on income based units for older people. Location is 4300 Highway 22, Mandeville, Louisiana, call 985-626-5217.

Safe Harbor of Covington (call (985) 626-5740) offer assistance and homeless shelter for victims of domestic violence. Also get information on legal support, rent programs, transitional apartments, and more in an effort to get resettled.

Community Action in St. Tammany Parish provides applications to ESG grant money to help pay rent, security deposit help and other support. Case mangers help the low-income and people in poverty. St. Tammany Parish and SE Louisiana Free Legal Services is a volunteer, non-profit driven law firm. Low-income and/or senior citizens who rent an apartment, that are facing discrimination or eviction, can get free legal aid. Lawyers and staff fight evictions, assist renters in housing court and offer other services. Call (504) 529-1000.

Salvation Army social services help Slidell and qualified St. Tammany Parish families. Emergency housing or homeless shelters, rent money, case management and more is offered. Travelers Aid Society of GNO may be able to assist individuals with their rent on the verge of eviction/homelessness. Emergency transportation is given too. The Crisis-Intervention/Case Management Program they run may also be able to assist people who are currently homeless find a place to live. Look into emergency financial help and rent assistance.

  • The agency may also have basic needs support services. Clients of the program may also receive vouchers for shelter, short term housing, a place to store their belongings, and more.
