Salvation Army in Port Huron and St. Clair County programs.

The Salvation Army in Port Huron provides social services that will help a client address a crisis and they will also arrange for professional counseling and/or case management. The assistance provided in St. Clair County will depend on what may be beneficial to the client, and can include food, housing, rent help, free Christmas toys, transportation, school supplies and much more.

Food and basic needs from St. Clair County Salvation Army

In an effort to reduce hunger, and to preserve the dignity of low income families, the St. Clair County Salvation Army client choice food pantry is open. Ensuring that struggling families as well as senior citizens and children are fed is one of the key missions of the Christian based group.

When it is fully stocked, the Food Pantry serves both canned and fresh food. There may be dozens of people that stop by weekly. Since it is a client choice operation, this allows the client to in effect select what is most appropriate for their family. This differs from other pantries in that the person is not just handed a box of food from a location.

Some of what may be available includes personal hygiene, canned meat or vegetables, toilet paper, cleaning products sugar, soup, cereal, and tuna helper mixes. Those are just some examples of what the client choice pantry may have. When there are special food needs, the Salvation Army may give a voucher to use to buy the critical item at a local grocery store.

There is also the non-food bank/pantry. Similar to above in that clients pick what they need. This is where the seasonal programs (such as free school supplies) run from. Many residents of St. Clair County may even refer to this resource as the clothing bank. Whatever they call it, it provides non-food items, furniture, clothing, school uniforms and much more.

The Salvation Army of Port Huron non-food bank also gives out free back to school supplies each year. Items are given away to needy students. Backpacks, folders, laptops, shoes, pens, pencils, and more can be given based on donations. There may even be free gift cards for school supplies.

Adopt a Family is the primary Christmas program. It helps existing clients of the Salvation Army during the holidays. While children may be referred to Angel Tree so they can be “adopted”, this service also helps senior citizens and anyone in need. This is also run in partnership with VOA - Volunteers of America.

Qualified families will be matched with local donors. The Salvation Army in St. Clair County will arrange for free food baskets, gifts for children, meals, and home delivery to seniors and people in nursing homes. There may also be free Christmas decorations and a Thanksgiving/Christmas meal served. More on Michigan free Christmas Adopt a Family gift programs.
