San Bernardino County Saint Vincent de Paul assistance programs.

San Bernardino County Society of Saint Vincent de Paul provides assistance to the low income, poor, immigrants or migrants and others in the county. There is everything from free boxes of food or hot meals to financial help for rent or bills, furniture, a low cost thrift store and other services. SVDP operates from multiple sites in San Bernardino County using volunteers and donations.

There is help offered regardless of race, religion, language or ethnicity. Whether a few emergency funds to pay bills, free items from a clothing bank or thrift store, housing or referrals, assistance is offered.

Emergency assistance for bills from SVDP in San Bernardino County

General Emergency Assistance is limited. When available, the charitable SVDP may help in the areas of providing free food from a pantry, clothing, rent help, repairs to home heating devices, payment for temporary shelter, critical work-related transportation, etc. The purpose is to help families in meeting emergency needs, and find other emergency rent help in San Bernardino County.

As with any form of help, there is a maximum dollar amount of financial assistance that can be provided to a household within a twelve (12) months' period. In addition, there are income limits, and the even which created the need for assistance must have occurred not more than 30 days prior to the date of application. The actual amount of any grant for paying bills or other expenses that is authorized for any household will be determined on a case-by-case basis by the case manager at Society of Saint Vincent de Paul.

General assistance also focuses on the area of employment. The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul in San Bernardino County will coordinate this service with public and private sector companies, as many groups such as WIA centers help meet this need as well. There is always a demand to use other available resources to help end a cycle of poverty as well as underemployment.

In almost all instances, a home visit is offered by SVDP.  There is help offered to immigrants and migrant workers, Spanish speakers, the elderly, and others in need.

The Youth in San Bernardino County are a focus too. There are so called “projects” and activities for them. Based on donations, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul may offer them information on jobs or volunteer work so teens and students can gain skills. Free books are passed out, as well as healthy meals, snacks, or food boxes. They also offer Spanish speakers ESL classes or field trips or recreational activities.

Free food, meals, low cost thrift stores and basic needs

What is sometimes called the second chance store in Needles California sells items to the general public. Not only does it save residents of San Bernardino money, the location also raises money for the other Society of SVDP programs. The funds from the sale of goods at the thrift store helps pay for financial aid, shelter programs, the free food pantry or other family assistance. In each and every case, 100% of surplus money raised from the thrift store offers help directly where it is needed in the community.

Note that the thrift store only sells goods that come from the public. The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul relies on donations of clothing, furniture, toys and household goods from the community. There is also a need for workers, so there are volunteers and employed staff who work there. Not only that, the location will also allow individuals that need experience, or that have a hardship, a place to work as they begin to put the pieces of their life back together.

Anyone shopping there can find great bargains and save a bunch of money. The goods sold will of course be gently used, but affordable and in overall decent condition.

Assistance is available for food needs. Most of the aid from Society of Saint Vincent is coordinated by the pantry on site. The location, which is open limited hours, will also require proof of income as well as residency in San Bernardino County. They also operate with other local churches in order to avoid duplication of services with other nearby charity groups.

The food pantry has many types of items available. There may be soup, canned fruit or vegetables, baby formula, cereal, USDA certified groceries for seniors, and more. A couple bags of groceries may be passed out in an emergency.

When using the SVDP of San Bernardino County food bank or soup kitchens, clients will learn about other low income assistance programs that they may be qualified for. Very low income families can apply for WIC or CalFresh food stamps. This is done as the staff learned that anyone that needs free food often needs other help too, whether it is housing, clothing, or prescription vouchers. So all of this is explored. Even read more on food stamp applications in California.

This means, in a crisis or when there is a specific needs, free goods are offered like clothes, couches, tables, dishes, school supplies, Christmas or birthday toys and other goods. They may be seasonal or year round.

SVDP in San Bernardino also helps migrant workers, Spanish speakers, refugees and newcomers to the region. Some basic needs may be offered, such as food or meals. There may also be referrals to low cost housing or homeless shelters. Or get information on job programs as well as working from home or gig type work. The goal is to help newcomers, even non-English speakers, get settled as well as the support they need for long term success.
