Salvation Army assistance programs Summers and Monroe County.

The counties of Summers and Monroe have a Salvation Army center in Princeton that provides emergency assistance as well as in kind goods to the needy in the community. Everything from free food to transitional housing, rent or electric bill help, as well as free Christmas toys or school supplies are offered.

The Christian based charity will work to help the vulnerable make it through a crisis and then refer the client to long term support. Whether the Summers or Monroe County resident needs counseling, a box of groceries, or money for some critical bills, assistance will be arranged by the Salvation Army.

The homeless in the community can also get help. The Princeton West Virginia center tries to feed them, offer shelter, clothing, and hygiene needs such as soap and razors. Of course, the main support is to help them work towards stability. The exact programs for the homeless includes the following.

  • Housing from the Salvation Army in Princeton includes shelter and transitional apartments.
  • Soup kitchens feed the homeless by offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner using the donations and support from volunteers.
  • Other items range from clothing to furniture for a new home.
  • Children of the homeless, including single moms, may be enrolled into local Princeton WV school and given the supplies and uniforms they need.

Princeton West Virginia Salvation Army food pantry – This is a service that feeds the hungry, unemployed, or that that are just struggling to buy groceries for their family. The pantry is open a few days per week and is a client choice location, meaning it gives the family extra choices. It also gives them more dignity as they are not just handed a box of food and sent on their way. Instead a client choice set up in effect allows the family to shop for the food they want and need. The location may have the following.

Pantries goods include peanut better and jelly, cereal, rice, canned fruit and meat, dairy, and breads. There may also be milk or free baby formula for new mothers or low income parents. The Salvation Army will also try to ensure the food given out meets USDA guidelines for senior citizens and newborns, as they often have special dietary needs.

In addition to food, budgeting and shopping classes give pantry clients the skills they need for long term stability. There will be sessions covered on how to cook healthy meals or use coupons effectively when shopping at stores such as Kroger or Wal-Mart. Or learn about unit pricing. This will help families living in poverty spend their often limited budgets more effectively.

Salvation Army Disaster Relief services help during floods, fires, or other events in Summers and Monroe County. Responding to the victims, as well as first responders, the organization may provide the following.

  • -Vouchers to pay for a motel room or placement into overnight shelters.
  • -Food and nutritional support, including water, meals, and groceries.
  • -In order to rehouse the victim, there may be vouchers to use to ship at the thrift store for furniture, bedding, rugs, and the like.

Volunteers from the center, as well as case managers, assist senior citizens in the region. The Salvation Army has a few different services for them in these cases.

  • Supportive housing in the form of low income, rent based apartments are in the community.
  • The elderly that can't get out on their own to shop or prepare meals can have food (including Thanksgiving and Christmas meals) delivered to them.
  • The Salvation Army Summers and Monroe center has recreational activities and companionship, often in partnership with the Agency on Aging. Or find other senior assistance and care in Wes Virginia.

There are some instances in which the organization is able to offer general financial aid. But this is limited and the Princeton Salvation Army has restrictions in place. They will need proof of income, residency, and future self-sufficiency.

When possible, grants may be used to help with a rental or utility bill payment to stop homelessness. There may also be free vouchers for medications or to buy a bus pass/gasoline. The main goal of any financial support is around housing needs (such as rent or energy bills) as these are what may often lead to homelessness if not addressed.

Financial aid does not include their seasonal programs. But it can help in some cases. As an example of these Salvation Army assistance programs in Princeton, these include free toys for kids for Christmas or school uniforms, notebooks, backpacks, and more for students. These are also critical services administered.
