Get short term or emergency rental assistance in Monterey County California. Individuals and families who are faced with eviction or who struggling to pay their monthly rent can apply. Families can contact one of the non-profits, government programs, or agencies below. Learn about the services and rent assistance programs they administer for those who need help.

Priority for emergency rent assistance is usually provided to those with an eviction notice, to families with children, senior citizens, and the disabled. Funding is always limited, and many programs, in particular section 8, have waiting lists. However the non-profit organizations in Monterey County will do what they can to help people pay their rent or security deposits. If they can’t help an applicant, they can often refer an individual to other local, state, or federal government housing assistance programs.

This government agency provides low income rental assistance and emergency support. They also run the section 8 program and people can apply there. Section 8 basically supplements rents in private market units that meet Housing Authority standards. The client in the program pays 30% of their total household income for rent.

Among other housing and rental assistance programs offered is the security deposit guarantee program. This program provides guarantees to landlords that the renters security deposit will be paid during the first year of tenancy. In order to qualify for help, the tenant needs to pay 1/12 of the deposit each month for one year.

The Monterey charity organization provides eviction prevention/rental assistance to assist family in avoiding eviction from their home or apartment. The goal is to prevent homelessness. Emergency shelter is also on site for men and women in the community.

California Rural Legal Assistance

This law firm provides free or low cost legal assistance and education to low income Monterey County residents. The attorneys and lawyers always focus on tenant/landlord rights and responsibilities as well as eviction prevention, in particular preventing and contesting illegal evictions.

Monterey Veterans Resource Center, which can be reached at 831-375-1184, offers housing assistance. There may be emergency grants for paying rent as well as help in obtaining permanent or transitional housing. Security deposit and move in cost assistance is also offered for veterans.

Monterey Peninsula Salvation Army - Very limited financial aid is sometimes offered. Some rent assistance may be paid out in the form of a loan. Call them for free or low cost legal advice and representation for persons age 60 and older who are socially or economically needy or low income.
