McHenry and Kane County Salvation Army emergency assistance programs.

Salvation Army Corps Community Centers and Service Extension Units provide assistance to qualified McHenry and Kane County families. Emergency assistance for rent, heating bills and free stuff such as school supplies, shelter, blankets for the homeless, or Christmas toys may be offered. In addition, other other aid can be distributed from these Salvation Army locations.

Centers and Service Units have limited resources, and rely heavily on volunteers and donations as well. They may be able to provide many forms of assistance to persons in need, including vital emergency assistance programs and services. Across Kane and McHenry County there are several units which are overseen by Salvation Army personnel from various offices, including Crystal Lake.

Financial help from the Salvation Army in McHenry County and Kane region

Financial assistance can be distributed for the following types of needs and help. All funding is limited, and the applicant’s information and hardship needs to be documented and verified.

  • Heating and utility assistance may be provided if someone has a disconnect notice. Aid is only offered if it will help someone keep their services on.
  • Funds for rent may be distributed if it will prevent an eviction.
  • Seasonal and holiday assistance is offered for low income families. This can include free Christmas toys and meals. An annual free back to school supply drive takes place too.
  • Additional services, advice, and case management is offered on a case by case basis.

The Salvation Army always specializes in helping people who are faced with a disaster. They have teams that focus on this need. They offer a Mobile Canteen service to First Responders, provide vouchers, and other support to McHenry and Kane impacted families.

Seasonal programs are administered too. In addition to the holiday and Christmas programs indicated above, the Salvation Army also runs a Back to School supply and backpack program, Summer Youth Camps, Christmas Toyland Toy Shop Program, and even a Thanksgiving Meal Basket Program (limited).

The Salvation Army center that is located in Carpentersville Illinois also provides financial assistance to help people pay rent and utility bills when cash and funding is available. These housing programs will make partial rental payments for families and individuals who are at risk of eviction from their home or apartment if they do not receive assistance. There are age, income, disability, need and other eligibility requirements.

A food pantry operates one day per week. The Salvation Army will acquire food products through local canned drives, donations, or even direct purchase. They will then distribute these food items to people who are in emergency situations, and some meals may also be delivered to seniors or the elderly.

The Nicor Sharing Program and other energy bill assistance programs operate in McHenry and Kane County, and the Salvation Army can refer people to them. Most of these resources pay all or a portion of the heating and/or utility bills of people whose utilities have been disconnected, or who are faced with a shut off. Also get help in applying for non-emergency programs like weatherization or the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Both of these target low income households in Illinois.

Additional social service programs

There is also a literacy program in secondary education. Work or school clothing is available in Kane as well as McHenry County; however aid is normally restricted to once every six months for each applicant.

These services are also available as part of budgeting and money management. Salvation army sites work with others to show people how to live within their means save money, use coupons, and build for a strong financial future. Find other money saving suggestions.

Your local Salvation Corps Community Center is also a great, safe place for people to come to be friends and with those who care about you, and who want to ensure you achieve long term success. People can also come to obtain assistance with a basic need. They can explore available resources from one of the many Emergency Assistance Programs. Or families with children can enroll in one of the Youth or Children Programs. There are also substance abuse resources (for drugs or alcohol). The Corps Community Center brings the resources of the local Illinois community to those who need assistance.
