The Salvation Army in Marquette County provides support as part of Family Services. The faith-based charity has several categories of what is provided, ranging from rent help for housing to summer camp for children to free school items, food and Christmas toys. During a crisis, when a resident of Marquette Michigan has no other options to help them, the Salvation Army may be there as a safety net.

Family Store

Many people often refer to this as a thrift store. The location not only sells goods to the community, but it allows the Marquette County Salvation Army to raise funds for its operation as well as for the financial aid programs administered. The following list of items may be available, but what is sold can change daily.

-Gently used clothing for an entire family, no matter the age, income, or gender.
-Small kitchen appliances, utensils, microwaves, freezers, glassware and linens.
-Gently used and/or re-upholstered furniture, such as couches, tables, chairs, and more.
-Christmas toys, winter boots or coats, books, collectibles, and much more.

The store at the Marquette County Salvation Army is a low cost “dream” for bargain hunters. Note that some people may be given free goods or a voucher to shop at the store. The program will enable certain income qualified clients to purchase furniture, kitchen goods, holiday toys, and clothing free of charge. This form of assistance is done through the charities voucher process and the Salvation Army will help struggling families meet their household needs. All applicants will be screened by a specialist. There will be a review of their employment situation, finances, and needs among other things. After this has been completed the intake specialist will use this information to help determine the needs of the household. They will then either offer them their own support and/or refer them to other appropriate resources in Marquette County, including churches, government aid, and more.

 

 

 

Shelters are available in the region. The locations are generally for homeless families, veterans, children, single moms, and other vulnerable individuals. Anyone that turns to the Marquette County Salvation Army can stay in the shelter for a matter of days. During this stay they can get a meal, use a shower, and search for jobs. Of course the time will allow the person time to find more stable, either transitional or permanent housing in the community.

Salvation Army Marquette County referrals – The intake specialists can link the client to transportation services such as free gasoline vouchers, childcare, mainstream benefits including SNAP food stamps, housing, or employment. Case workers can also refer clients to free daycare from the Michigan government. Since the Salvation Army is limited in funding, they often refer members of the community

Free holiday programs are run. Low to moderate income parents, or those facing a crisis such as unemployment, sometimes struggle to pay for expensive Christmas presents or buy a Thanksgiving meal. Therefore the Marquette Michigan Salvation Army tries to assist. The Angel Tree may have free Christmas toys and there is also a soup kitchen with meals. The food pantry may also have holiday food baskets for qualified families.

Grants and financial aid for critical living expenses may be offered in collaboration with non-profits such as the United Way and other charity agencies in the community. Since funding is very limited, every application is closely screened to validate need.

What may be provides includes everything for partial rent payment to money for energy bills or heat. This form of financial support is mainly for people threatened by homelessness. Note that in some cases, assistance for paying rent or some other costs may be provided in the form of a no-interest loan.

There are also programs focused on overall development, which includes case management. Marquette County Salvation Army specialists’ partner with both adults as well as children on these programs. It is also a needs based approach to assisting the client. What may be offered includes enrollment into summer camps as well as GED classes. Students from low income families may be given free school clothes, uniforms, or other supplies too. The Salvation Army also helps people locate employment in the community.
