West Warwick and Kent County Salvation Army assistance programs.

The Salvation Army in Kent County Rhode Island provides support to struggling, low income families. They also help immigrants, the disabled, seniors, and single moms or dads among others. A number of assistance programs are available to support the West Warwick area community, ranging from a Family Store to food pantries, financial aid to pay bills, rent or for gasoline, Christmas toys or meals, free school supplies and much more.

Operating as a Christian, faith based charity, they assist residents of all ages, backgrounds, and religions. The resources available at the Salvation Army mostly come from the sale of goods at their Family Store, with additional resources from United Way grants or fund raisers held in the community. More information on their programs as well as who can get help is below.

Salvation Army low cost goods or free items

Family Store – This is often referred to as a thrift location. It sells products to the community, and anyone can shop there no matter their age, religion, or background. There may be low cost goods for sale, or in some cases the Kent County Salvation Army will pass out free stuff for the low income if they have special requirements. Find furniture, beds, clothes, cribs, kitchen utensils, appliances, and more.

Salvation Army free food pantry and clothing bank – A combination of groceries, household supplies, cleaning items, and other goods are often passed out. The goal is to stop hunger in the community as well as feed/cloth/personal hygiene the poor, homeless, and less fortunate. The food pantry can also be used in an emergency. Or West Warwick area families can get free holiday meals, including at Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter.

Kent County emergency assistance from Salvation Army

Disaster relief in Kent County – This is a core Salvation Army program. They respond whether snow, flood, fire, or some other disaster hits the family. The charity will give out food and water. Some vouchers may be offered to feed people impacted, or maybe even them up in a motel for a night or two. The Kent County Salvation Army may also provide free supplies and other stuff to help them resettle from the Family Store above.

Emergency financial assistance – Many people will request this throughout their lives, but it is difficult to qualify for. The charity will offer some funds to pay for certain bills, rent, medications, or even job related costs, such as gasoline. During the cold Kent County Rhode Island winters, there is also help for heating bills to keep households warm. Even find free heating oil programs near you.

Any type of financial support will only be for income qualified families. They need to have copies of income from a job or government aid (so they can pay future bills, mortgage or rent on their own), identifications, and other documentation. The Salvation Army will also only provide a small dollar amount of money to the applicant; when they even have funds to assist. Or they can work with a Salvation Army case worker to apply for public assistance in RI.

Salvation Army Overnight homeless shelter – This can not only help the homeless in the community, but shelters can also be used by the West Warwick community at large during the winter and summer months. The centers will keep people warm during winter, or cool during summer. Also at the shelter may be free hot meals or breakfast, a blanket, drink, and more. Kent County residents who are poor and/or homeless can also avail themselves of the case management referenced below.

Guidance and case management – Salvation Army volunteers and case management partner with clients to help them overcome their challenges. They give them whatever is needed, based on what has been identified through the case management process. There is information on job programs, applying for public aid such as food stamps, budgeting workshops held in West Warwick, and other Salvation Army resources.

Additional support – That is just a sampling of what may be offered in Kent County. The Salvation Army will give more assistance too. It may be a Meals on Wheels service for a senior citizen, or summer camp/after school care for a student. Other aid is extensive too. There are also free back to school supply giveaways for students of all ages and grades, from K to 12.
