Salvation Army Horry County area assistance programs.

Salvation Army programs are offered year round in the Horry County, Myrtle Beach and the Georgetown South Carolina region. Programs range from emergency financial help for basic needs (rent, food, utility bills, etc.) and also more seasonal support, such as free back to school supplies, food or meals for Christmas. Find help from the Salvation Army centers in the Horry County area.

Thousands of low income families and senior citizens in the region receive support from the Christian church-charity every year. A goal of the Salvation Army is to help people in a crisis pay their bills (or get the stuff they need) while arranging long term case management.

Emergency help with electric bills, rent and housing costs

Salvation Army rent assistance programs are part of eviction prevention and homeless prevention services.  Those low-income families or single mothers in Horry County or surrounding areas that are struggling with their rent, facing eviction, or who may be currently homeless can face extreme difficulty in meeting needs. Limited funds to help pay back rent in SC and cash assistance may be offered to those facing eviction, or get help in finding a new, more affordable home in the coastal region of South Carolina.

  • The homeless prevention program will try to keep people housed and provide them what they need. Whether someone needs furniture, clothing, prescription medications, transportation, work tools, uniforms or school supplies, staff will try to meet this need. Sometimes they need to involve other groups in Myrtle Beach or Horry County as they go about this.

Case managers will try to create an intervention program to prevent individuals and families from slipping back into homelessness, whether from delinquent rent or a utility disconnection. The Salvation Army will use assessments, creativity, flexibility and advanced problem solving skills to connect folks to the resources and services they may need.

Assistance programs for the currently homeless are offered too. Those who qualify can get coats, clothes, shoes, blankets, and other necessities. Not only that, but Salvation Army Staff will also meet daily with homeless clients in Myrtle Beach and Conway SC. The charity will offer problem solving, goal setting, and will help them by encouraging growth and change. Personal hygiene kits may be offered. All of this, and more, is available from the Salvation Army. They will do their best to provide additional assistance based on individual client needs and requirements.

Disaster programs are offered too. If one strikes, look into emergency assistance from the Salvation Army. The non-profit can provide direct financial assistance to victims through a system of trained social workers and caseworkers. Programs can help victims of fire, hurricanes or other events. In the early stages of an event, any type of emergency financial assistance and support offered is focused on meeting victims’ essential needs including clothing, free food, shelter, housing and medical services.

Free Christmas assistance is usually offered starting in October or so. That time of the year can be joyful, hectic, and it may also be a never-ending activity. One of the most popular and exciting holiday programs offered around Thanksgiving and Christmas is the Angel Tree.

  • These are usually set up in businesses around the Horry County and the Georgetown region, with an online Angel Tree program also offered. Angel Tree will allow people in the public to “adopt” a needy child and purchase Christmas gifts, toys, and clothing for him or her. This holiday assistance program collects goods, such as toys and food to give to those in need of holiday joy. Other services include Bear Dressing, Red Kettle Campaign, and Stocking Stuffing.

The local Horry County Salvation Army Family Store program sells gently used goods to the general public. Shoppers, regardless of their income and background, can purchase merchandise in good condition for reasonable prices. This includes clothes for kids, school supplies, work uniforms and anything else that the Salvation Army may have in stock.

Back to school assistance is offered in Horry County. As most families and children know, the beginning of a new school year in South Carolina should be a time of eagerness and excitement. Yet for many children from lower income and poor families it can be embarrassing if they do not have adequate shoes, school supplies, clothes, and other goods. So the Salvation Army and the Clothes for Kids program provides these children from low income families with the free clothes and supplies they need to start the school year with confidence.

With many retirees and seniors in Georgetown and Myrtle Beach, the Salvation Army administers resources for them. Each activity held will usually have a nutritious lunch served, social activities, an engaging program and more for seniors, including information on free government money in SC for seniors 60+.
