Salvation Army Fauquier County and Warrenton assistance programs.

The Warrenton Salvation Army serves adults, children, infants, and others Fauquier County that are struggling and/or low income. As many as 15 different resources are available. Some of them are financial, including grants for paying electric or cooling bills as well as rent. Other programs are focused on material goods, including a thrift store, the Adopt A Child gift program, a food pantry, as well as free back to school supplies and even meals for pets!

The services are provided regardless of the applicant's race, religion, or faith. But the local center also provides services in English, but referrals can be provided to speakers of other languages such as English. The center in Warrenton is open Monday to Friday, with self referrals available.

The Salvation Army will require a picture ID and proof of income, including a check stub for the entire household. This will be needed before applying for financial aid for housing or energy bills. Some of the other programs including the food pantry or Blessing Bags for the Homeless are less restrictive. But applicants should be prepared to show proof of need or hardship.

Holiday assistance programs are available from the Fauquier County Salvation Army. There is the Adopt a Child, which gives free Christmas toys, gifts, games, or clothes. Generally over 200 children are assisted each year. The location also provides Christmas and Thanksgiving food baskets. Anyone seeking help for their kids needs to pick up an application at the Warrenton office, complete it on time, and be sure there is a Wish List form attached.

The social service center also has Christmas Stockings for Seniors. This is for those that are independent, or for individuals that live in a nursing home in Fauquier County. Salvation Army volunteers can also visit seniors that may be living in the hospital.

There are only 2 financial aid programs available. Some are run by the Fauquier County Salvation Army, others are more statewide resources. In either case, there will only be funds to help pay winter heating fuel bills. Or during a hot summer month, free window fans or cooling bill help may be arranged.

But referrals may be given as well, as the Warrenton office is a resource center. When it comes to rent or housing assistance, this will only be made available using a referral process. Or clients can be referred to local clinics or homeless prevention programs in Virginia as well.

Both individuals and pets can use a food pantry. The Salvation Army will of course focus on feeding adults, children, the disabled, and elderly by passing out boxes of groceries. There is also a  Blessing Bags for the Homeless that may contain both food as well as hygiene supplies, such as razors, soap, etc. But they also realize how important a pet dog or cat may be to a vulnerable individual. So an on site Pet Food Ministry may sometimes have bags or canned food for a pet.

The Fauquier County Salvation Army family store (dial  (540) 341-8385) hours are Monday to Friday 10-5, with limed hours Saturday. This location can sell  upholstered furniture (when the facility has room available), gently used clothes, books, CD’s, housewares, exercise equipment, computers, DVD’s, new and unopened toys, mattresses, and a wide plethora of holiday items.

Children that need a place after school, or during the summer, can look into the Salvation Army Camp Happyland for Children in Warrenton. This will allow provide the parent a place to drop their kid off. There will be educational programs, hot meals given, snacks, and a caring adult looking out for them.
