Delta County and Escanaba free food pantries.

Anyone who needs help in Escanaba or Delta County Michigan can contact the non-profits below for assistance. The Salvation Army runs a food pantry which is located at 3001 5th Avenue South. Another option is St. Vincent de Paul, which operates a pantry at 115 North 8th Street. The weak economy in Michigan and the lack of full-time jobs with health and other benefits may be increasing the number of people who need to rely on the resources of local food pantries.

The St. Vincent de Paul Service Center is generally open on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. This location is very busy, and provides a lot of groceries, food and meals to the community. Anyone can use the pantry, regardless of their background, income or religion. The food pantry is located in the St. Vincent de Paul Service Center located at 115 North 8th Street, and is open until 2pm.

  • A number of local Catholic churches contribute to St. Vincent de Paul as it is a Catholic-run charity. Food, groceries, and canned goods for the pantry are typically purchased as needed with any donated funds. The pantry is frequently asked for a variety of items and dry goods such as cereals, pancake mix, crackers and breads.
  • Donations and contributions are always welcome too. The Escanaba St. Vincent de Paul pantry does accept donations of food and other contributions at the back door of its warehouse, which is located at 815 1st Ave. N. daily. Donations are accepted between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. The pantry is frequently in need of dry goods such as pancake mix, crackers and cereals.

As indicated above, the Delta County Michigan Salvation Army food pantry is located at the Salvation Army center at 3001 5th Ave. S. in Escanaba. Call (906) 786-0590. Monday 9-noon /1-3:30 and on Thursday 9-noon and 1-3:30.  The Salvation Army pantry is closed for federally recognized holidays. In addition, people in need or families may visit the food pantry one time each calendar month at most.

  • This center distributes a large amount of peanut butter, canned meats, box dinners, cereal, jelly, and canned meals like spaghetti and ravioli to the community. Fresh meats are also distributed from the pantry. Supplies are always limited, and the meat pantry more than often will have fewer supplies to provide. The Salvation Army pantry gives out more than 60,000 pounds of food each year on average to people across Delta County Michigan.

The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive donates to both the St. Vincent de Paul as well as the Salvation Army food pantry. The drive is run on a national basis, and it is an annual event sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers and other organizations. Why they are constantly receiving donations from the community and organizations like Stamp Out Hunger, the more items they receive the faster they distribute food to the needy.

St. Vincent de Paul usually gives out at least 250 cases of food or emergency boxes every month. The food provided in the boxes is not cheap and is high quality. To put it into perspective, an average box of food, if you got it out of a store or local retailer, would normally cost you about $60. Those food boxes with meat would be about $75 at retail price. However Saint Vincent will give people these same boxes for free!

The food boxes and pre-packaged cases are filled with basic foods such as canned goods, cereals, rice and other non-perishables. Some of the family-sized boxes that are distributed are designed to feed three or more people. More so called single serve boxes are also available for individuals and couples. So families are usually able to provide for their entire family by stopping by one of these centers.

The demand tends to pick up during the summer. This will usually happen because the children are home, where normally they'd be fed at school.
