Social workers can provide very low, working poor and families living in poverty with improved living conditions. Receive free or low cost housing and tenant mediation from MidPenn Legal Services. For Dauphin County residents being evicted, or facing housing discrimination, free legal services help stop evictions and address illegal housing issues.

  • Lawyers from MidPenn Legal can also answer question on public housing programs and other government benefits, including applications for money to pay rent. Also get answers to questions on security deposits, such as how can a tenant get a security deposit back when they move, apartment repairs, how much can a landlord charge, and questions like that. Harrisburg Shelter-HELP attempts to find short term, emergency shelter or apartments for those low income individuals in need of housing. The location also provides a number of services to homeless women, children, and men as well, including info on local rent assistance programs. People who are faced with an eviction, and who fall into the category of being threatened by homelessness, can get crisis assistance too, such as emergency rent payments or funds for security deposits.

  • Christian Churches United of the Tri-County Area and the HELP Ministries offer immediate help, including for back rent or utilities. Capital Area Coalition on Homelessness is a non-profit agency that provides various housing programs. Families or single adults can benefit from transitional and emergency housing, rental assistance, and a number of other support programs. The location is 10 N 2nd, Harrisburg, PA 17101. Dauphin County CAO (County Assistance Office) offers grants for rent help to the homeless and families facing eviction. The Emergency Shelter Allowance run is from the office at 2432 N 7th St, Harrisburg, PA 17110. The center may also issue no interest loans for paying rent arrears or utility expenses. Bridge of Hope Harrisburg Area only offers rent help to women, including those with children or single parents. Rent assistance Dauphin County PAShalom House will help families, seniors, and the working poor gain housing independence. The Salvation Army of Dauphin County and Harrisburg Capital City Region helps the homeless and low-income families. Pathstone, which can be reached at 610-925-5600, offers housing and one time rental assistance to migrants and seasonal farm workers in Dauphin County. There is also funds for security deposits, mortgages, energy bill programs, and shelter. The goal is to help the working poor, including immigrants, with rent to reduce the number of homeless people in the region.
