Christian Community Service Center assistance programs (CCSC).

Outreach as well as emergency assistance from Christian Community Service Center is for the less fortunate in Harris County as well as the cit of Houston. The non-profit will do its best to help the low income pay bills or rent over the short term and will also coordinate longer term self-sufficiency and case management. They can also help address basic needs from the food pantry or Sunshine Resale Thrift Store.

Find funds and emergency help for bills, food and living expenses

Emergency Services – Central is for solving a crisis. This was created to be an outreach program that assists low-income central and southwest Houston or Harris County residents who are in dire needs. Some of the services include providing clothing, medical bill assistance, food and rental and/or utility assistance. Volunteers from CCSC are dedicated to helping others in the community access the loans or funds they need for their emergency.

The Food Pantry from Christian Community Service Center furnishes packages containing supplies of groceries to Harris County Texas residents that are experiencing hunger or food insecurity. Food packages are assembled by volunteers and the staff to provide items that are necessary for the preparation of well-balanced, healthy meals.

In addition to the free, regular food package, the Christian Community Service Center will also distribute fresh fruit, vegetables and other produce from their community garden, as it becomes available. The Pantry also ensures that special needs are met for clients with dietary needs, such as the elderly, or those who are homeless. There are other senior assistance programs for the elderly in Texas.

Limited financial assistance can include cash grants or money raised from the community. The funds can be used to help with rent or utility bill payments, and any aid is available on a by-appointment-only basis. As resources allow, CCSC will also provide financial assistance with medical needs, prescription medication, eyeglasses, and other medical necessities.

This service is available on a first-come, first-served basis. However, it is strongly suggested that clients call ahead, because some types of financial assistance or even the food items may not be available at all times.

Eye care is available. The Louise J. Moran Vision Care funded program provides services with schools in particularly underprivileged parts of the Harris County service area. Doctors will perform on-site vision screenings to students at their schools, identifying children in need with the assistance of school nurses. Then there will be “field trips” to the University of Houston's University Eye Institute (School of Optometry) for eyeglass dispensary services as well as advanced, professional examinations.

CCSC programs to help long term stability in Harris County

The JobNet Program’s focus is on the needs of underemployed or unemployed persons who may be struggling with significant barriers to getting a job, such as having limited experience or English skills, computer skills, education, and so on. The charity also helps stay at home moms make money and get jobs. This is done by working with the client in building skills as well as accessing tools required for a successful job search, and providing guidance and support.

Services are provided by the agencies skilled volunteers, who work with clients in a one-on-one setting, in a supportive environment. Participants learn many things from their teachers, including how to set goals, use a computer or proper business etiquette, and staff also offer encouragement to their fellow job-seekers. Other topics include how to create resumes, and practice their interview skills.

Martha's Way is a vocational job training program that equips low-income clients to establish and operate their own businesses. This is done by Christian Community Service Center focusing on classroom education, hands-on training, and job leads. The program’s goal is to help participants increase their income over the long term.

Seasonal items, such as school supplies and free Christmas assistance

CCSC’s Back to School Program meets the basic needs of school-aged children who lack supplies, such as clothing, notebooks, or uniforms to start the academic year. The charity may give them items so they have an equal footing with their more advantaged peers. Benefits go beyond obtaining school supplies and clothing; the program also enhance their mental readiness for learning as well as helps increase the students’ self-esteem. More on free back to school supplies in Houston.

Qualifying clients are given an opportunity to select clothing items at no charge to them from a center. When they have available funds, vouchers may be used to purchase diapers, children’s underwear, or blankets to supplement the donated items.

A thrift stop is the run by CCSC’s. The Sunshine Resale Shop in Bellaire, Texas will sell items to the general public, including furniture, jewelry, clothing, lamps, rugs, household items, Christmas gifts, and collectibles, are sorted. Items are then sent to JobNet, Emergency Services referenced above or Back to School for distribution to low-income residents and those facing poverty.

Remaining clothing and other items, provided they are in decent shape, are sold at the Resale Shop at a fraction of full retail cost, providing a service to community residents, particularly those who live on fixed or limited incomes. Funds raised go right back to paying for the financial CCSC programs, or the money raised may be loaned out to clients for their expenses.

Jingle Bell Express, or JBE, is a free Christmas program for children from needy families in Houston. The resource is set up as a shop, where parents from the city and county have the opportunity to select gifts for their children, including toys, games and new books. JBE also furnishes all the ingredients for a delicious Christmas meal from the pantry.

The Christian Community Service Center referral system provides connections and access to other Houston area community agencies or charities that are offering services that are not available at CCSC. Staff at the center maintain resource books listing various options to ensure that clients are referred to other area agencies for quality long-term assistance. This may be help for child care costs, low-cost housing, government benefits, healthcare, and much more.
