Learn about non-profit credit counseling services available in the Chicago IL area, with many of the programs offered for free to income qualified people. Residents can get help with reducing their debt(s) (credit cards, medical, etc.) as well as help with a home loan, credit repair services and more. In addition to help people with “everyday” debt and financial obligations, most of the organizations are also HUD certified housing counselors. Some of the programs and resources offered by the Chicago non-profit credit and housing counselors include the following. Call a location in your area of Cook County or even a national non-profit (as listed below) to learn more, or to apply for help. Services typically offered include.

  • Debt and budget counseling, which assist individuals who are no longer able to manage their medical debt, credit cards, car loans or other obligations. This may include signing up for a debt management plan to lower interest rates, reduce fees, and more.
  • Negotiation and mediation - A non-profit counselor will make arrangements with creditors and your bank for payment plans. Some negotiations may be entered into directly by the counselor.
  • Access to HUD approved housing counseling. This is offered to homeowners in Chicago to help them avoid a foreclosure and help them get back on track with paying their mortgage.
  • Other programs offered by non-profit credit counselors in Chicago and Cook County are wide ranging. There is bankruptcy counseling, free financial literacy courses and various other types of debt relief on a case by case basis.
