Assistance from the Cape Girardeau County Salvation Army.

As many as 10 different social services are available from the Cape Girardeau County Salvation Army. Everything from free food to financial help for bills or rent, motel vouchers, Christmas toys, heating bill help or back school supplies may be available. But the assistance is constantly evolving, and there maybe times in which more financial aid or free stuff is offered or their more be times in which resources run out.

Get free year round and seasonal items from the Cape Girardeau Salvation Army

Hundreds if not thousands of dollars of free toys, meals, food baskets and gifts are donated by the Cape Girardeau County Salvation Army Christmas programs. They share the joy of the holidays with senior citizens, the poor, and especially children. The main local service is Angel Tree as well as Adopt a Family. The Salvation Army also gives free holiday food baskets at Thanksgiving and Christmas, including turkey dinners.

The Salvation Army summer camp serve thousands of children from working class families in the state of Missouri. They operate in Cape Girardeau County and often partner with other nearby churches in different counties. The service will reconnect people (both adults and kids) with nature. It allows a student someplace safe to go during the summer, gives the kid a meal, and provides mentoring among other benefits. Youth often need hope and support, and this service does that.

Salvation Army has other free resources as well. They include some of the following. They do rely on donations from the greater Cape Girardeau County community.

  • -Free food pantries give out groceries, hot meals, personal hygiene items, detergent and more.
  • -Salvation Army back to school supplies help students of all ages. Get backpacks, notebooks, Chromebooks, pens, pencils, uniforms and more.
  • -Vouchers to pay for gasoline (for work) or free motel and hotel vouchers.

Two other resources open to the public is the Salvation Army worship service as well as thrift store. One is more for counseling, mostly spiritual. But the store is open to sell affordable items. Clients can find furniture, beds, household supplies, and much more. The prices are much lower than other retail costs. Some of the other items for sale at the Family Store include:

  • -Birthday or Christmas toys, games, and gifts.
  • -Vintage CD or records.
  • -Items to help single moms and dads save money, such as cribs.
  • -Beds, tables, appliances, washers, TVs, etc.
  • -There are other options too. Find local thrift stores near you.

Cape Girardeau Salvation Army emergency financial assistance programs

People from the community that are facing a short term crisis (but are otherwise self-sufficient) can seek support. The Cape Girardeau County Salvation Army Financial Assistance programs help with many different bills. They assist individuals and otherwise self-sufficient families in the local community who have been overwhelmed by a house fire, a unexpected job layoff, illness, death of spouse, or any other crisis.

Using money from the Red Kettle, United Way grants, and other funding, the charity may offer emergency grants or supplies. There may also be life-sustaining assistance with clothing, rental or mortgage, utilities, food, free school supplies and even furniture (beds, mattresses, etc.) to individuals and families facing a financial crisis. Other personal items may be given too. Case workers also direct clients to Missouri LIHEAP and energy bill help.

Housing needs are met through homeless shelters, transitional housing, and the rent/deposit programs mentioned above. With too many working class families one check from homelessness, the charity can sometimes serve as a safety net of last resort.

Families who are close to homelessness, or individuals living on the street, are some of the main clients. They will be given both immediate and compassionate assistance from their case manager. Will money and food is one part of the aid, much more critical are the work and employment skills to become stable. The program will divert them from the mired cycle of homelessness, hopelessness and isolation.

There are two main agencies that respond in Cape Girardeau County during times of destruction and devastation. One is the American Red Cross, and the other is the Salvation Army. They both offer disaster relief. Whether it is a mobile canteen to bring relief, food, shelter, blankets or more, the workers comfort victims. Both short term crisis relief is given as well as long term cleanup and reconstruction.
