The charities and churches provide free Christmas gifts, toys for tots, books, and clothes to children. Entire families, whether they are low income or just struggling, may be given free groceries for a Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner, or maybe served an entire meal too. Many assistance programs are offered to struggling Cameron County residents as well as senior citizens and immigrants. They offer free furniture, food from a pantry, Thanksgiving meals, Christmas toys, and more.   • Cameron County has a holiday toy drive. They collect items from centers such as Administration Building at 964 E. Harrison St., Brownsville; Old Cameron County Courthouse (Dancy Building) at 1100 E. Monroe St., Brownsville; San Benito Annex Building at 1390 W. Expressway 83, San Benito; or the Harlingen Annex Building at 3302 Wilson Rd, Harlingen.
  • The Brownsville Police Department and City - Most years the government agencies try to collect new, unwrapped toys from the community then provide them to Children in Brownsville at a special holiday event. The programs is known as Christmas for Kids Toy Giveaway and there may be clothes, games, books, matchbox cars and more.
