Cameron and Hidalgo County clothing closets and thrift stores.

Several non-profits, churches and charity clothing closets on the so called tip of Texas provide gently used goods, clothes, and items to the needy and low income. While the thrift stores are generally open to anyone from the counties of Cameron, Hidalgo, Willacy, or Starr, the clothing closets will generally only give free items to the less fortunate and low income.

The specifics of each organization will vary. Some locations will have clothing items for work or school. Other sites may have maternity goods, diapers, or provide free Christmas toys and gifts. Not only do the specifics of each organization and program vary, but the clothing closets also rely on donations from the community so the support they provide could end from time to time.

The main centers in the area are below. It is recommend to call for hours as they will be limited. Also, if a clothing closet or store is not near you, then referrals may always be available to additional locations in Hidalgo or Cameron Texas.

This sites doesn’t run a distribution center, but what they do is provide a free clothing drive which is available to the larger community on different dates throughout the year. That drive may then have free clothes or household items.

Marine Toys For Tots Foundation

The operates in all of the counties. It offers children from qualified low income families with a free toy or gift so that they can experience the joy of Christmas and the holidays. The program partners with local Toy R Us stores as well, which collect donations.





Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley - There are several locations of this charity and its partner churches. They are noted below. A number of social services are administered, including referrals, food, limited financial aid, and personal goods. This can include clothing type items, blankets for the homeless, school items and more. A focus is also on veterans and those that served in Iraq and Afghanistan. There are sites in Hidalgo and other counties too.

As resources allow, has emergency assistance including clothing. The site may provide furniture assistance only for fire cases. Other programs include Christmas gifts and toys, a thrift store, and school supplies. Groceries, rent, and utility help may be offered too.
