Boone County area and northern KY Salvation Army assistance programs.

Regardless of faith or age, the Boone County Salvation Army is a faith based charity that may be able to help. Not only can they offer free food from a pantry or assistance around the holidays (free Christmas toys or school supplies), but the charity will also direct the client to programs to help them break the cycle of poverty. Or they give out rent help, motel vouchers or access to homeless shelters. Some of what may provided by their Family Services is as follows.

Free Salvation Army services and goods in Boone County

So called basic needs are covered by the center. There is a free food pantry/clothing closet that is often used by residents of Florence or Union KY. Another resource, the Salvation Army thrift store, can also sell low income families the goods they need at a reduced price. Yet a third basic needs service in Boone County is the Angel Tree Christmas program, and this offers free toys, clothing, and more for children.

The pantry is the place to try for groceries. There may be pasta, soup, canned meat, dairy items, and even infant formula. This is a client choice center so people only select what they need. When using the Boone County Salvation Army food pantry, it can only be accessed a few times per year. Also, “shoppers” should bring a bag or box to pack their groceries into.

The Salvation Army in Boone County also operates seasonal services. The largest is for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday. This is where parents with children under the age of 13 can apply for toys or a meal, including free Turkeys at Thanksgiving. Another major program to help children is back to school supplies. This is where a child from a low income household can get a uniform, notebook, pens, pencils, boots, and other items they need for a new school year. Since the Salvation Army covers a wide area, it is possible to get back to school supplies sent in the mail.

Additional services are also part of what the charity may offer. Those in need can stop by to meet with a social worker, or they also run a church service. All of the information given by the Salvation Army, or what the person reveals to them, is done in confidence. This is where the client can learn about topics such as vocational rehab, drug counseling, and even have issues such as mental health addressed.

Salvation Army emergency financial assistance in Boone County

In an emergency, the Family Services may have small dollar amounts of financial aid. This will only be for a crisis though, and the Salvation Army will focus on the most vulnerable. Applicants to the Boone County based agency should have a plan in mind as well, as they will only help pay a portion of a bill.

Some of the expenses covered may be rent or energy bills to help prevent homelessness. If there is a patient in Boone County or Florence Kentucky which is very ill, and that needs medications, then a voucher may be arranged to help them pay for the prescription drug. If a senior citizen needs a way to stay cool during the summer (or warm during the winter) then free fans or small space heaters may be given. So various types of financial help may be issued.

When funds are available, the money will only be issued to those clients with proof of income. They also need to complete an application, have copies of identification for all household members, and residency. If there are not any money available to help the client, then the Salvation Army will give referrals.

Housing and free homeless shelters can be coordinated as part of Kentucky homeless prevention programs. There are units for senior citizens and shelter for women or children fleeing domestic violence. The Boone County Salvation Army works to help these individuals make it through a difficult period but keeping them safe and off the streets. The senior housing also coordinates other care for the client as well.

Still even more resources are administered in Florence and Union. They include summer camp for youth, information on after school care, general counseling and disaster relief. Those programs are as follows.

  • -Summer camps are for students from low income households in Boone County and Northern Kentucky. The Salvation Army organizes activities for them, and can arrange free food, snacks, and education assistance.
  • -After school care is similar to above in that children from working poor families may enroll.
  • -Disaster relief is when the Salvation Army works with partners to provide shelter, meals, water, food, and guidance to both the survivors and first responders in Boone County.
  • -Counseling from the faith based charity includes everything from personal issues to job training/placement to help the client increase their income.
