Salvation Army emergency assistance programs in Ashe and Wilkes County area

There are a few main programs offered at the North Wilkesboro and West Jefferson Salvation Army. They include financial aid as part of Social Services for rent or utility bills, free basic needs, a Center of Hope (shelter, housing, etc.) as well as information on job programs. In addition, the Family Store is open to the public, and anyone can shop there for low cost goods. Or they can donate to the Salvation Army Family Store for Ashe and Wilkes County or get food from the pantry.

Those are the main resources available in Ashe and Wilkes County region. But from time to time other assistance may be available, and that will depend on the season, donation as well as funding levels. In addition, since resources are limited, many people whop seek financial help for paying their bills will not be able to be assisted.

Help for bills, food, and basic needs from the Salvation Army in Wilkes and Ashe area

Low income families, with a short term emergency or specific challenge, may benefit from Social Service Assistance. This is the program in which the Salvation Army pays out limited funding for some critical bills. Examples may be rent to stop an eviction; utilities to keep power or lights on; medications for a sick patient without insurance; gasoline for a job interview; and similar expenses. Each application to the North Wilkesboro and West Jefferson region Salvation Army will be reviewed and approved or denied based on many factors.

Social Services also includes emergency groceries and/or clothes. This is mostly met by the North Wilkesboro and West Jefferson Salvation Army food pantry or thrift store. There may be canned groceries, perishable food, baby formula, diapers, supplements for the elderly, and more. When it comes to clothing (mostly for work or the winter) vouchers are given to shop at the Family Store.

As noted, the seasonal programs in Wilkes  and Ashe County include the Salvation Army Angel Tree as well as Adopt a Family. The free toys and gifts are for kids under the age of 13. But Adopt a Family may also include others in the home, and this is where food boxes, meals, and other items are supplied to the struggling household. The other primary season service is free back to school supplies for students. There may be uniforms, bookbags, shoes, pens, pencils, electronics, and much more.

Find bargains on quality items, clothing, furniture, and more at the Family Store, which is a consignment store. There are two other services available as the result of this, and they include the ability for people to donate surplus goods to it along with volunteer/employment opportunities. There are also online tools for shoppers to buy or sell goods. So the formerly homeless and/or underemployed can gain the skills they need for a higher income. Or they can use online marketplaces for selling goods for extra cash.

All of this is available at the West Jefferson Salvation Army thrift location. In addition, please note that the money raised from the sale of goods are used to fund soup kitchens, shelters, the Social Services Financial aid and even drug or alcohol rehabilitation programs.

Ashe and Wilkes County Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services are organized by the Salvation Army. They coordinate several basic services in all events, and that may be free food, hot meals, shelter, emotional support, vouchers for new furniture or clothing, and much more.

Social services and case management

The Center of Hope encompasses everything from job programs to self-sufficiency in other areas of a clients life. The Salvation Army offers a soup kitchen and shelter. The housing gives spiritual and physical care, free meals, a place to shower, and a bed in a shelter to people in need. This also generally involves case management to help the guest get back on their feet. The Center of Hope also includes a Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation program for those that need it.

Job Skills Training, and Career Counseling, is also organized by the Ashe and Wilkes County Salvation Army. It gives clients the skills necessary to build self-confidence and prepare them for the real world. It does this at the same time as allowing the person to become more employable and moving towards re-entry into society.  It also involves money management, computer training, certifications, life skills, and more. There may also be free financial assistance given to clients around clothing vouchers, food boxes, transportation to a class and/or work, and more.
