West Virginia HUD-Certified Foreclosure Prevention and Housing Counseling Agencies
This is page covers HUD counseling in West Virginia, including what agencies operate in the state and how they help current homeowners or potential buyers. The agencies listed below cover a range of regions, but significant stretches of the state — particularly in southern and eastern coalfield counties — have limited or no local options but there is remote service. The agencies provide everything from free foreclosure counseling services to buyer education classes, information on loan modifications as well as other services.
West Virginia has one of the highest rates of owner-occupied housing in the country — more than three quarters of residents own their homes — which means foreclosure is a significant concern here. The state also has a relatively small number of HUD-certified housing counseling agencies spread across a large, mountainous geography. For homeowners in those areas, several agencies on this page provide counseling by phone, and the national HUD hotline connects callers to certified help regardless of location. To speak with a certified counselor by phone, call the national HUD housing counseling hotline: 800-569-4287 or use the online tool at https://www.hud.gov/findacounselor.
- Do not pay for help. All legitimate foreclosure counseling is free. Anyone who asks for upfront money to stop a foreclosure, arrange legal support or negotiate with your lender is running a scam. Report them to the West Virginia Attorney General at 800-368-8808.
