Society of St. Vincent de Paul assistance programs Marathon County and Wassau.

The Marathon County Saint Vincent de Paul provides financial help using money raised from the sale of goods at the thrift store in Wassau. The emergency financial aid may be for housing costs such as rent, utilities or a mortgage. There is also free stuff from the SVDP in Marathon County, and that may be food, clothes, furniture or even transportation. Home visits are required for those in need,

The Cabrini Conference is the main parish in the region. They also partner with churches, the United Way, and other groups, including volunteers that work at and donate to the thrift store. The funds raised are used for financial support.

Low-cost thrift store in Marathon County

It costs money for a charity such as Society of Saint Vincent de Paul to offer financial assistance. The organization (while mostly dependent on volunteers) also needs money to run its basic operating expenses, such as the offices electric, rent ,and more. This is where the thrift store can help.

This location is where people can drop in to shop for low cost goods or get medical equipment. It also provides members of the community to stop into the office where they can learn about other social services administered, whether shelter, emergency financial help, the free food pantry, community clinics in Wisconsin for healthcare and more. All of those services are in fact paid for by the sale of items from the thrift store.

So there are multiple reasons that the thrift store exists in the community. While first and foremost is to sell gently used items to the public, another key reason is to all the agency to raise money to give back to the Marathon County community.

Saint Vincent de Paul Conference emergency financial assistance

The Social Services program from the Cabrini Saint Vincent Conference combines counseling, emergency financial aid, as well as referrals from a reference database from the United Way. There is support to help people the development of self-sufficiency. The goal is to offer accurate information to families requesting help. As part of this financial help, a home visit is required.

This visit is used to verify the need. Such as does the applicant have food in their refrigerator or pantry. Or is their home or apartment in need of furniture. Or do they have a job. All of this, and more, is verified by the SVDP home visit.

When families request help from SVDP in Wassau Wisconsin, all applicants are closely screened to both verify need and determine the most appropriate form of aid that can be provided to the person, if anything. This is where a home visit from staff takes place.

In order to qualify for a grant, clients must be employed or actively searching for employment, disabled, in school or training, or elderly. Or work with a SVDP case worker. The types of monetary assistance offered by the non-profit charity include for Rent or Mortgage payments, utilities, Prescription Assistance, a Food Crisis Cupboard, and School Supplies for children.

The Licensed Social Workers will offer other support too. The team at the non-profit will work individually with each client. They will explore ways to get the person enrolled into education or training and help them create contingency plans as well as a budget for future expenses. Other services in Marathon County range from drug and alcohol abuse programs to GED programs, job training, and mental health care. There is also help for medical or dental needs to address underlying health conditions.

When it comes to any money paid out for bills, rent, or expenses, it is limited. Generally, the Society of Saint Vincent will only pay out around $300 at most. In addition, the funds are paid to the “vendor” owed, such as landlord, utility company, or other provider. Funds are never given directly to the applicant.
