Umatilla, Union, Wallowa County Salvation Army assistance programs.

The social service office of the Salvation Army attempts to assist those in need. Short term emergency assistance and longer term case management is available in Umatilla, Morrow, Union, Wallowa, and Grant County Oregon. Thousands of inquires are made to the non-profit every year. While everyone can't be assisted, some people may receive food, financial aid for paying rent or utility bills, and other support. The Salvation Army offers qualified low income or struggling families with a hand up and not a hand out.

The Social Service Office offers emergency assistance to those in need or facing a crisis. One of the resources is the Daily Bread Feeding Program, which gives qualified residents a free hot lunch and also companionship. The centers can also help individuals and seniors during the winter. It is important to get out of the cold and stay warm. Also, during the summer months, the centers provide an escape from the heat.

The non-profit provides unemployed, struggling and impoverished individuals and families with transitional housing and other supportive services. This can include utility assistance, free food boxes, clothing and other basic household items. During the holidays, Umatilla County families may receive free Thanksgiving and Christmas toys, meals, or food boxes.

While very limited, the Salvation Army offers emergency financial assistance with utilities, housing, home repairs, and prescriptions. The repairs are generally for the disabled and for those local residents 65 years of age and older. Other social services in Grant County and Umatilla Oregon include youth enrichment programs, Community Cares Ministry, and guidance.

All of the family services and emergency programs are offered as the agency knows that providing for the survival of the family is critical. So the rent or energy assistance will be to prevent homeless or a utility disconnection. Case managers from the Salvation Army and/or their partners try to address the needs of those that are struggling. It is the goal of the case managers to get people back on their feet and into a better life. When struggling or facing difficult circumstances, the Salvation Army is there for senior citizens, children, and families in the region. They offer necessities such as food, heating bill help, and more.

When the Salvation Army does provide people with help, they will also require clients to have a plan to achieve stability. So the individual needs to be actively employed, searching for a job, attending financial literacy workshops, and taking other steps as well. The reason is that any financial aid is one time and short term in nature.

Providing help during the holidays is available for needy families. After all, this is the most special time of year, and the Salvation Army will assist during Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Thanksgiving assistance includes a free turkey and all the fixings. The agency will provide families with enough for a traditional Thanksgiving meal. During Christmas, the Salvation Army will provide people with a chicken, ham or turkey to go along with fresh produce. In addition to the food and meals, children 12 years of age and under can receive free toys and gifts.

All of these holiday programs rely on the generosity of Umatilla, Union and Grant County residents. Bags of groceries are filled with other donations that come to the Salvation Army through canned food drives. Also, your monetary donations help them purchase additional food to meet the need. They aid needy families, seniors, children, and even the homeless in keeping with the spirit of the season.

Disaster Relief and Emergency Response is offered to families. The Salvation Army, working with other organizations in Oregon such as the American Red Cross, offers resources including Disaster Relief. Volunteers and staff assists fire and police personnel at area fires, floods, tornadoes, and other natural disasters.
