Tucson and Pima County Salvation Army emergency assistance programs.

The Tucson Arizona branch of the Salvation Army contains a Family Services Department. A number of social services and case workers support the needy, and may be able to provide qualified families with emergency assistance for basic needs, whether it is rent, food, or clothes.

Programs are usually for those who are considered most needy and at risk. The primary mission of the Salvation Army is to bridge the gap between the low income and the tools and resources that are necessary for their survival and success. Some of the emergency financial assistance programs and services offered by the Tucson Salvation Army can include.

  • Housing expenses, such as rent and mortgage assistance. A focus is on homeless prevention.
  • Utility bill assistance, such as summer cooling and/or winter heating bills.
  • Food is provided from Amphi Corps/Hosp House locations, and will include grocery and free food boxes.
  • Household items are offered such as personal hygiene supplies and clothing.

A main program offered in Tucson is known as the S.A.F.E. (Salvation Army Family Extended) Housing Program. This resource was created back in the mid 1980s to address the needs of low income individuals and families that may be faced with homelessness and unemployment.

Qualified applicants may be able to get intensive case management on needs such as housing and other supportive services such as clothing, food, personal hygiene items and household products. Receive referrals to agencies that offer emergency rental assistance in Pima County. The goal of SAFE is to enable Tucson Salvation Army clients to leave the assistance program and to be free of government assistance. The individual should be able to receive full-time, permanent employment, a savings account, credit counseling, and other services that can help them over the long term. it also combines eviction prevention in Arizona, as that is a goal of the Pima County Salvation Army.

Throughout the maximum six-month enrollment period of S.A.F.E. Housing, the program will incorporate varied job training and rent/housing programs to help transition low income and working poor people that are faced with eviction from homelessness and despair to self-sufficiency. Specifically, Salvation Army case workers can offer Tucson families with Living Skills and Community Resource Training; provide a safe living environment for Children and other Victims of Domestic Violence; and also offer Employment & Educational Opportunities. A primary goal is to promote self-sufficiency through employment and job training.

Tucson Arizona Salvation Army holiday assistance

Every Thanksgiving and Christmas, thanks mainly to the generosity of Tucson families, corporations and businesses, their employees, and the generous people of the greater Tucson community, the Salvation Army is able to provide thousands of new toys, clothing items, and gifts to needy families as part of the Christmas Angel Program. Receiving a gift around the holidays can help people free up money for other pressing needs, such as their energy bills or rent payments.

This assistance program is also known as Stuff-the-Bus as well as the generic name of toy drives. Donated toys and items are provided to needy children from low income families in the community. The non-profit Tucson Salvation Army distributes the toys through their annual toy distribution events, which is called Santa’s Toy Shop. Families and their children who are in need of holiday assistance are selected through the School and local Agency Referral Programs.

The Toy Distribution program is Tucson Arizona’s largest pre-screened and pre-approved toy assistance program. Thousands of needy children from low income families and working poor households receive help every year, and many of these children may have otherwise gone without gifts or a hot meal under the Christmas tree.

The families who are selected for this holiday assistance will not only receive an opportunity to "shop" for their children at The Salvation Army's Toy Shop or a local Thrift Store, but also receive a Basha's food voucher or grocery voucher to help provide a warm meal and perishable food items for Christmas.

Free Christmas meals and dinners are offered as well in Pima County. The annual holiday dinners, which are usually held on Christmas Day, will normally serve almost 4000 individuals hot meals. The Christmas dinners may include items such as a turkey dinner with all the trimmings, takeout lunch bag, a gift from Santa for the children, holiday musical entertainment, and other festivities.

Help is also offered around Thanksgiving. Guests of the Salvation Army may be able to enjoy a turkey dinner with takeout lunch bag, all the trimmings, toys for kids by The Shyann Kindness Project, holiday musical entertainment by Kids Unlimited, and other holiday festivities.
