Salvation Army assistance programs in Terrebonne and Lafourche Parish.

Several social services and emergency assistance programs are administered by the Salvation Army in the Lafourche parish Louisiana region. Locate everything from free Christmas toys or school supplies to rent or utility bill help, food from a pantry, or motel vouchers. The Salvation Army also offers case management, guidance and spiritual counseling among other resources.

The non-profit charity is focused on meeting the basic needs of the low income, poor, and seniors, among many others. In addition to the programs above and below, the Lafourche Salvation Army offers many other resources. The organization will also provide referrals, case management and other support to those that need help.

Regional family stores and donation centers sell goods to the general public. Anyone from the area can use the thrift centers, and your income does not matter. While the exact items for sale will change, even by season, they can include some or all of the following. Locate free clothing, school supplies, Christmas gifts and toys, or other household goods.

Another item to note is that the Salvation Army Thrift Stores pay for many of their social services and outreach programs. By selling these goods to the general public, the locations will raise much needed funding. The money raised from the sale of products at these Thrift Stores is used to pay for financial assistance programs in Louisiana such as rent, utilities, food, and more. So by shopping at or donating goods to one of the thrift stores in Terrebonne or Lafourche parish, the Salvation Army is able serve more individuals in need.

The social service programs try to help the low income and working poor meet the basic needs of life. Some direct financial aid may be offered, or the Salvation Army may offer referrals. Social services can include shelter, food, clothing, financial assistance to pay rent or utilities, and other critical needs that have to be met. While the main office is located at 924 Jackson St. in Thibodaux Louisiana, they serve the region and can offer referrals as well. Call (985) 447-2930.

Providing counseling and casework is a core competency of the Salvation Army and its many volunteers and staff members. Examples of what may be offered in Lafourche include job placement, financial planning, credit repair classes, and more. For example, programs can help young, single mothers obtain housing in a transitional facility, the uninsured can access health care, and advocacy is always offered.

One local resource, known as the Bed and Bread Program, is the emergency shelter service for homeless and transient individuals in the region. Some people and families from the community just need a short stay in a housing unit until they receive their social security check, first pay check, or until they start that new job. Others who use the Terrebonne housing units are traveling through for one reason or another and need a free shelter for a night or two. The Salvation Army shelters and transitional housing units can provide a safe environment for those in need to sleep, get a meal, and receive counseling.

Food and feeding programs are in place. The Salvation Army will do its best to provide food boxes and/or a hot meal to anyone who comes seeking support or who needs a free hot meal. One constant is that the meals are always healthy, low cost (or free) and provide children and families with basic nutrition. The food pantries generally can provide several days worth of canned goods and groceries to families to provide them time to get back on their feet.

Disaster assistance is available. The non-profit will try to meet the basic needs of those who have been impacted by the event. This includes both survivors and first responders of the disaster. They offer material aid (such as food and clothes), emotional support, and case management. So they can supply free store vouchers for those who are disaster survivors.

In addition to the social services indicated above, some programs are focused on paying bills and related housing costs. This can include cash for rent, utility, or cooling bills. This type of aid is very limited though. Most of the resources are for those individuals in Terrebonne and Lafourche parish who are struggling to remain in their home or keep their power on. Any assistance will also usually be for a partial rent or energy bill payment.

Other local programs can include employment assistance, including job search. Transportation can be arranged to help people get to a local job interview or maybe a senior is offered a ride to a doctor appointment. The Salvation Army also provides seasonal assistance across Louisiana, including back to school supplies and free Christmas assistance from programs such as Angel Tree. The non-profit can provide gifts, toys and clothing for children and seniors who need help at the holidays.
