Susquehanna County area Salvation Army assistance programs.

The Salvation Army in the Susquehanna County region is part of the nationwide, Christian based organization. The location does have a church on site, but there is so much more. Families, children, and seniors can call on the Salvation Army for free food, Christmas meals or toys, school supplies and even emergency financial aid for paying some bills or rental costs.

The center, which operates a Family Services division, only focuses on people in the immediate region, such as the town/city of Forest City. If a resident lives in another part of Susquehanna County (or another county in its entirety) then the charity can refer them to a center for their needs.

When applying for help (whether funds for energy bills, food, or even case management), the applicant should have the following. Bring proof of residency and income, including for all household members. This includes income from a job, benefits such as SSI or food stamps, or section 8. Also, the Forest City Salvation Army needs a copy of a budget, landlord – tenant lease agreement, and utility bills. Other documents may also be requested, and this is one way how to apply for help.

Types of assistance offered

The Susquehanna County Salvation Army may have some or all of the following, based on funding levels, donations, and volunteers.

Temporary housing, including local emergency shelters, supportive housing for senior citizens, and transitional housing for the formerly homeless.

Free food and hot meals can be served. There may be breakfast/lunch/dinner to the homeless and hungry. Or families can use the Susquehanna County Salvation Army food bank for an emergency box of free groceries.

Emergency funds are used for critical living expenses. If the applicant contributes (and agrees to counseling) there may be money for utility bills; security deposits; medications; or rent. Any Salvation Army financial aid is limited and for a crisis only.

Disaster relief is emphasized by the Salvation Army in Susquehanna County as well as nationwide. They often respond before anyone else. A Mobile food pantry provide meals or water. There is also clothes, new furniture from the thrift store, and short term shelter arranged.

Forest City Salvation Army seasonal services help the low income during Easter, back to school season, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Everything from meals to Christmas toys or school supplies are given out.

The Ministry provides support to the most vulnerable. The Salvation Army offer alcohol or drug rehab, counseling, and guidance to the most vulnerable in the community.

Senior services, especially for those living on a fixed income or that lack mobility, are emphasized. Volunteers can drive them to the store or doctor in Susquehanna County, and the Salvation Army also helps them with medical and housing needs.

Children, teenagers, and students can benefit. Snacks are given, and pre as well as after school care is arranged. These Salvation Army Forest City services also benefit the parent. Or find other Pennsylvania free daycare programs.

Donations are always accepted, and the Christian charity also gives people the ability to give back to their local town by volunteering. The Salvation Army raises money for their assistance programs using Red Kettle, or they need people to raise money or collect goods for the community.

Family Store is a consignment type shop. Based upon donations, the Salvation Army center sells clothing, furniture, birthday toys, shoes, work attire, and dozens of other goods. Some low income families can be given a discount (or voucher) to shop there.

Applying to Susquehanna County Salvation Army

There are other social services administered as well. But the Salvation Army Susquehanna County programs, or staff, can't do it all themselves. They require active participation from the client. The organization will also partner with many other social service organizations in the region as well. The address is 636 Main St, Forest City, PA 18421, or dial (570) 785-4357.
