Salvation Army Sumter County South Carolina assistance programs.

Any type of emergency assistance programs from Sumter County South Carolina Salvation Army are focused on individuals that need a second chance with say paying rent, food, or finding supplies like free Christmas gifts, but that are willing to gain self-sufficiency. While they will try to help people that fall into that category, there are other resources for the general public, namely the ability to shop at a thrift store as well as people that can volunteer.

The financial aid that many people may request (but that is limited) is part of the Sumter Salvation Army Family Services. There are a few categories that any support falls into, and those include housing, food, medical, and employment needs. The goal of any assistance is to resolve a health or safety crisis, which may include lack of food, homelessness, or the need to pay for health care. This is when the Salvation Army may be able to assist.

When a Sumter County family with a low income is facing homelessness (due to rent or utility bill issues), then there may be some money provided. Any type of grant given by the Salvation Army will only be for a partial payment. The applicant also needs to make a financial contribution. But there may be funds for everything from rent to electric or water bills. When applying, bring proof of income; copies of eviction or utility disconnection letter; and information on how the client will stabilize their situation.

The Salvation Army in Sumter tries to assist with employment needs. This form of support is for residents that are seeking a job or need a way to get to their job for a few short days. Different resources are used to assist here, including vouchers to buy work clothes (such as dresses, pants, boots, etc); free gasoline vouchers or buss passes; and also rides from volunteers.

As noted, a thrift store is also on site, and there are two separate locations in Sumter South Carolina in which these family Stores operate. This sells gently used furniture, clothing, and other items. The volunteers from the charity collect goods from the community, package them, and then sell the goods. Shoppers can find gently used clothes for work or school, car seats, cribs, beds, and more. They include 445 Broad St as well as 5664 Broad St, or call (803) 494-9990.

Free Sumter SC Salvation Army vouchers may be used by people who can't afford to shop at the store. This is generally for people recovering from a disaster or that have a low income or are waiting on their next paycheck. The vouchers allows them to shop at the store for free. So they may be able to buy a crib for their newborn, pay for work items such as a computer or professional attire, and other goods.

As noted, the charity also helps with medical needs if there is a health care crisis. Mostly the Sumter Salvation Army will refer the person to a local clinic in Sumter County or nearby regions like Columbia or Charleston. In some rare cases, if the issue is serious enough and if funding allows, they will give the client a voucher to help pay for a medication. There are many other free clinics in South Carolina for low income families to try for health care needs.

Those are the Family Services (emergency financial help) run by the Salvation Army in Sumter. But they also try to provide other, more basic support. Those social services may be as follows.

-Disaster and emergency relief – When a flood, bad weather, or fire impacts the Sumter County family, the Salvation Army responds by giving clothes, free food, water, and other counseling.
-Food pantry – This is a box of groceries or hygiene items, which can feed the poor or homeless.
-Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas assistance programs provide kids with free toys and families with meals.
-Salvation Army Sumter programs are also focused on kids, and they can refer them to summer camps or give them a snack during the summer months. Mentoring is arranged too.

More information on financial help and referrals from Salvation Army

Referrals and linkage to other assistance is always provided. The Sumter County Salvation Army, like any non-profit, is very limited in what it can do. So even if the case managers can't meet the request of the client, they will do their best to link them to shelters, food programs such as SNAP, day care and more. Any struggling family that needs help, but that will do the work necessary to break the dependency of benefits/cycle of poverty, can call the center at (803) 775-9336. Or stop in at the main Salvation Army office at 16 Kendrick St, Sumter, SC 29150.
