Programs for the homeless in St. Louis.

Non-profits, government agencies, and charities in the St. Louis Missouri area focus on helping the homeless. Many volunteers, case managers, and social workers are dedicated to assisting homeless people in the city as well as the suburban areas of St. Louis. The leading agencies are Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Sts. Joachim and Ann Care Service, Room at the Inn, and Catholic Charities.

Sts. Joachim and Ann Care Service have a number of assistance programs to both prevent homelessness, and additional resources are provided to assist those who are currently homeless. Some of the programs offer temporary emergency housing, short term transitional housing, emergency rent/mortgage assistance, utility bill assistance, and home repairs. All of these services were designed to address the root causes of the individuals housing crisis and restore self-reliance. The greater St. Louis County is served by Room at the Inn. Up to 20 people per day can access its services, with a large number of them being children. The non-profit provides shelter, food, and additional services and resources including case management. For example, Room at the Inn helps clients and the needy identify issues, and they will try to correct the roof causes of their poverty or homelessness. The objective is to help people regain self-sufficiency, get back on track with their financial and employment situation and avoid future episodes of homelessness. This particular group is sponsored by and paid for by the ministry of the Sisters of Divine Providence, which is a community of women religious in St. Louis.

St. Charles Area Center location of Catholic Charities Community Services' (phone (314) 664-8990) can help the most vulnerable in the community, the homeless and those families or individuals who are near homeless. This can include people who are behind on their rent and who are facing imminent eviction. This Catholic Charity center offers direct assistance and social services in conjunction with the St. Vincent de Paul societies of the St. Charles deanery and other charity and non-profit organizations in Warren, St. Charles, and Lincoln Counties Missouri. Assistance provided by the St. Charles Area Center includes transportation, utilities, rent, mortgage assistance, medical assistance and security deposits.

 

 

 

 

Society of St. Vincent de Paul of St. Charles County Missouri is also hard at work through volunteers at a number of parishes across the city. For example, At Immaculate Conception Parish in Dardenne Prairie, the charity supports families who have sought emergency housing at a budget motel in Wentzville Missouri. Various other churches and religious organizations, including at least one other St. Louis Missouri Catholic parish, assist those who are staying there with their costs and with meals. One of the key goals of the St. Vincent de Paul at Immaculate Conception is to link families and the homeless with other agencies, government programs and non-profits that can assist people in obtaining permanent housing.

The St. Louis Missouri locations Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Room at the Inn and Catholic Charities have extensive programs for those facing imminent eviction and the current homeless. Efforts take place in the core or center of the city to assist individuals and families who are at risk of homelessness or homeless, with additional referrals and resources available in the suburbs.
