Southwest Arkansas Development Council emergency assistance programs.

With a focus on seniors and very low income families, the Southwest Arkansas Development Council provides assistance for basic needs. The non-profit community action agency works to address lack of food, medical care, and transportation. There may also be referrals to financial aid, such as for utility bills and other expenses. Programs are offered in the counties of Howard, Hempstead, Lafayette, Little River, Sevier, Miller, and Nevada.

The elderly and senior citizens in the region receive numerous services. They include Medicaid Personal Care, transportation, meals, and more. However residents of all agencies, that meet income and other qualifications, can get help from Southwest Arkansas Development Council.

Senior care and resources in Southwest Arkansas

The non-profit is a participating agency in the Arkansas Medicaid Personal Care Program. Due to this, SWADC's offers medical assessments, connections with needed services and clinics, and treatment plans. This is for residents of Columbia, Little River, Dallas, Hempstead, Howard, Lafayette, Miller, Nevada, Sevier, Union, and Ouachita Counties.

While most of our older and lower income clients are eligible for Medicaid, if you are not for to be qualified, visit your local Department of Human Services office to learn about Elderchoices. This statewide program provides services for people who may have a greater income or more available resources (such as savings) than a typical Medicaid client.

Those who apply and are found to be qualified for Elderchoices would then designate SWADC Personal Care as their providing agency. The organization will send a registered nurse to the client's home to perform the assessment and determine which services you may need. While various conditions need to be met, Southwest Arkansas Development Council will also offer private-pay services for those who are not eligible for Medicaid or Elderchoices.

Medicaid Non-Emergency Transportation, or NET from SWADC is a transportation service to medical appointments for clients in Southwestern Arkansas towns and counties. In order take advantage of this free service, qualified applicants must be enrolled in the Arkansas Medicaid Program, need to be out of all other options and visit the closest doctor or Medicaid provider in the area. It is offered in counties such as Miller, Sevier, and others.

 

 

 

Senior Activity Centers offer the elderly and their spouses the opportunity to gather for free meals and related social activities. This may be things such as exercise, recreation, book clubs, motivational speakers, computer training, and more. SAC's also host health fairs, credit counseling workshops, and trips that enable seniors to explore a variety of areas in Arkansas.

Financial help, including for utility bills and education or job training

Low-income residents are invited apply to SWADC's Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). This is available as short-term assistance for purchasing fuel for home heating bills. LIHEAP also provides links to long-term family development resources, which help individuals or families in their efforts to become self-sufficient.

In addition to offering a grant as a form of energy bill assistance, Southwest Arkansas Development Council will also provide additional assistance with utility bill payments to eligible households through the Emergency Food and Shelter Program.

Weatherization works with a number of area utilities and homeowners to offer free services that reduce costs for homeowners and increase home energy efficiency. The phone number for this program is 501-776-8446. In order to be eligible for this, a household must meet income criteria, and the house is required to be structurally sound. Some of the partner companies include Entergy Arkansas, Arkansas Western Gas, CenterPoint, Empire Electric, Oklahoma Gas and Electric, Southwestern Electric Power Company and Arkansas Oklahoma Gas.

Available services from a highly trained contractor may include replacement of doors and/or windows, attic and wall insulation; weather-stripping, installation of energy saving light bulbs; caulking and sealing of holes and cracks; and other updates.

Assurance 16 is a case management type program with a few different main areas of focus. They include household budgeting, free energy conservation measures, and utility consumption. Over a multiple month period, clients participate in exercises designed to teach them how to create and follow a household budget.

 

 

 

 

Support services from Southwest Arkansas Development Council include energy education, the creation of an individualized needs assessment, free budget counseling, vendor payment arrangements and subsequent office and/or home visits, as necessary. Educational services are part of English as a Second Language and computer training, among other resources. For various reasons, a number of adults in Arkansas experience difficulties with learning in a traditional classroom setting. Many may require one-on-one instruction. SWADC and their programs provide instruction in life skills, basic literacy, English as a Second Language (ESL), math, beginning computer skills, driver's education, and health literacy.

Teachers from Southwest Arkansas Development Council emphasize the provision of the finest guidance, training, and curricula to help students reach their personal goals. As a literacy non-profit organization, the agency will make education their primary focus, but they also provide assistance with other needs. This may include help for paying electric bills, completing job applications or unemployment forms, or applying for public assistance.
