Seneca County and Tiffin Salvation Army emergency assistance.

Volunteers and social workers from the Salvation Army in Seneca County are focused on helping the less fortunate in the community. They provide a wide variety of programs, and the primary ones are noted here. There are Angel Tree Christmas presents; holiday meals; financial assistance for paying bills; free food pantries; disaster relief; and case management to name a few. Most are the result of partnerships with the United Way. But the charity will also try to address other needs on a case by case basis.

The center operates using donations and volunteers from the community. Anyone seeking help from the Salvation Army needs to be a resident of Seneca County Ohio. There will application requirements, including proof of income, identification of all household members, copies of bills (utility, rent, mortgage, etc.) and much more. Each case is assessed on a one off basis.

Help available from Salvation Army services

Clothes for kids, including for school-aged children, is one service. This is part of the back to school program. Students are given supplies (notebooks, pencils, folders, etc.) as well as free school clothing (shoes, belts, uniforms, etc.). It helps the child start the new year with confidence.

Toy drives, stocking stuffers, and the Angel Tree program are all part of the Tiffin Ohio Salvation Army Christmas assistance programs. The goal is to give a child from a low income household age appropriate gifts. Shoppers and donors from the community are encouraged to give back, or pick a child's name from the Angel Tree to purchase a present for.

Due to the generous giving of donors, both corporate and individual, the Salvation Army food pantry battles hunger. There are groceries, baby formula, fresh fruits, Ensure for senior citizens, and other food items. The pantry operates from gifts from individuals, dedicated volunteers as well as local school food drives, all who work to end hunger. A community kitchen is also on site, and open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Fridays.

Vouchers and financial aid are offered in limited quantities. This is always limited and is for special circumstances as well. Any free vouchers for furniture or medications, or money for rent or utility bill assistance, is available as a hand up and not a hand out. The Salvation Army in Tiffin and Seneca County may make partial payments towards housing or other bills, if the applicant also contributes. There will also be case management and other requirements.

When disaster strikes, the organization responds. They cover storms, natural events, or other emergencies. All of these programs are formally known as disaster relief. Both volunteers and full time staff provide free drinks, snacks, meals, food boxes, and other support such as spiritual and emotional comfort. The disaster relief operates from either a canteen, or local shelter, mobile canteen.

Seniors also get special support. There are local Seneca County meal programs organized to help feed the elderly.  Other services also focus on caring for senior citizens as well. Examples of those range from holiday visits to local nursing homes at Christmas to free fans disbursed to keep people cool during the summer months. Additional recreational activities can benefit senior citizens as well, such as knitting groups, book reading sessions, and other activities, and much of these are available under the name of senior citizen assistance programs.

There is also a nearby Seneca County Salvation Army thrift store. Anyone can shop there for what they need. Some of the vouchers given out (as referenced above) can sometimes be redeemed at the center as well, and a big use of those is for people recovering from a disaster. The charity will help them obtain new furniture, get clothing, and other goods as well. Some other clients who may be given free items from the store include victims of domestic violence, veterans, and people under exceptional hardship.

The Tiffin Ohio Salvation Army in Seneca County has a main phone number of (419) 447-2252. The primary address is 505 E Market St, Tiffin, Ohio.
