St. Vincent de Paul assistance programs Sarasota County.

Parishes in Sarasota County that are part of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul help the poor, low income, vulnerable. There is emergency financial help (for electric, water bills, or rent); transportation help (car repairs or gasoline); free food; and even limited educational assistance or college scholarship programs.

Several parishes are part of SVDP as are hundreds of volunteers in the Sarasota region. There is Saint Peter and Paul the Apostles Conference, St. Thomas More, Church of the Incarnation, and more. They all rely on donations, money raised from thrift stores, and volunteers to give help.  Find details on getting assistance below.

Emergency financial assistance for bills, housing, food, transportation, etc.

Households that are having a housing crisis can apply for emergency rental or utility bills assistance from SVDP parishes in Sarasota County. Not only may there may be money available to help, but case management services are provided to all low to moderate income households as well. There will be grants for rent or energy bills along with free advice from case managers. There is also homeless shelters, rent assistance, and even free gasoline vouchers for work or educational purposes. Even the applicant needs a past due notice or be close to eviction.

The team at Society of Saint Vincent de Paul parishes will work with struggling households to determine the cause of the housing crisis. If and when needed, they will make referrals to social services in Sarasota or local charities. This process will also create a goal plan with ongoing follow up. The staff will closely monitor progress, including addressing educational and health care needs if needed. They will also refer families to loan programs if they have other critical expenses that need to be paid.

In order to receive a grant for rent, security deposits, or other needs, the applicant will need proof of their housing crisis. Or free gasoline vouchers or cards need proof of a job or school needs. This may be a notarized eviction letter from the landlord, referrals from another Sarasota County social service agency, letter from a shelter, or disconnect notice from a utility company.

Free emergency food or grocery boxes, paper goods, hygiene supplies or toiletries are passed out to battle hunger. There may also be baby formula for single moms or Ensure or supplements for the elderly. Non-perishable as well as fresh or frozen food may be offered by the Sarasota County St. Vincent de Paul.

 

 

 

Saint Vincent Sarasota education and work assistance

There are resources to help adults get to work (or training) such as free work attire or gasoline vouchers. There are also resources for younger kids, whether in school or high school, including the Sophie's Scholarship or referrals to other scholarship programs from corporations or non-profits. Or find other free scholarships for students or adults.

All of these are aimed at help Sarasota residents get a job (or higher paying one) or gain new skills. As all of that is critical to battling poverty. Note that in some cases the gasoline vouchers can also help people, including the elderly, get to a critical medical appointment.

There are multiple parishes around the region. Bring proof of income and need. Often the parishes will require the client to be able to pay future bills on their own, with their own income from a job or benefits. The main locations include the following.
