Samaritan House assistance programs in San Mateo County.

While the Samaritan House charity is a leading agency for families to turn to for free food, the charity offers much more. There are multiple free community health care clinics run by the charity, including in Redwood City, and they offer clothing as well. Thousands of families get free food, meals, and other care from the San Mateo County agency.

Hot meals, clothing and food from Samaritan House

The charity serves over 100,000 meals per year, and they are also the largest food distributor in San Mateo County. Fresh as well as perishable items may be offered. For many senior citizens as well low-income families, this service fills the gap between the need for adequate amounts of food and what the household needs.

Every day, hundreds of individuals turn to Samaritan House for high quality, healthy and essential foods. There may be freshly prepared meals or bags of groceries. All of this depends on donations from the community.

The Food Pantry will have boxes of free groceries for low-income families in San Mateo County who struggle to afford food for their family. They also help the unemployed as well as immigrants. Classes on saving money on groceries is offered too, as healthy cooking is critical. In addition to feeding those who might otherwise be hungry, this option provides an opportunity for families to prepare fresh meals together, in their own homes. Another option is the soup or house kitchen. Each month, the charity feeds thousands of hungry people, a large number of whom are single parents, low-income families with children, or the elderly. On weekdays, food is available at various locations, such as the the Summer Kids Lunch Program; Samaritan House Dining Room in the City of San Mateo; and there are also hot meals at the food pantry.

In addition, the Mobile Meals Program delivers to local charities. They partner with community centers, the Salvation Army, senior centers, and to the homes of seniors and those who are disabled and unable to visit feeding sites. On weekends, the Kitchen a the House prepares takeout lunches, with the support and assistance of numerous volunteers as well as community service organizations.

 

 

 

Low Cost Mobile Meals are for the homebound. Not every home has able-bodied individuals are able to attend meal sites outside of their homes. The fact is there are a number of seniors and disabled individuals who are unable to leave their residence. Mobile Meals Program volunteers from Samaritan House meet that need by delivering warm food to their homes.

Samaritan House King Café Summer Lunch Program operates for students. During the summer, this program provides meals to children who receive free subsidized lunches when school is in session, but who go without when on break. Teenaged volunteers assist in serving meals to children from low income families and unemployed households who participate in the recreational programs offered at King Center, which were created to help the the youth stay off the streets.

Free clothing vouchers are available to registered clients. The assistance from the Samaritan House is run in partnership with the Kids Closet, where parents can shop for items for their children at no cost.  Vouchers are available on a once-per-month, per family, basis. There may be uniforms or school supplies as well from Samaritan House in San Mateo County.

Holiday and Christmas help is offered too. Each year during the fall, Samaritan House offers assistance in the form of gifts for kids, supplemental food for holiday dinners and toys. All current clients of their services are eligible for this program.

-Home Delivery - Samaritan House clients for a delivered Christmas meal are typically seniors, those who are single moms, disabled or others who lack means of transportation.
-Direct Distribution of Christmas help is for clients to pick up items at pre-arranged times.
-Holiday help is also part of Family Sharing Program (FSP) – Families, children and seniors from San Mateo County are matched with donors, who “adopt” them in December and provide them with holiday food and gifts. The client must meet income guidelines and have a working phone line.

 

 

 

 

Medical and dental care in San Mateo County

Samaritan House's operates two Free Clinics for income qualified residents. There is one at 19 W. 39th Ave., San Mateo, and another center at 114 5th Ave., Redwood City. When resources allow, the location will provide primary as well as specialty dental or medical services to low-income San Mateo residents who do not have insurance.

The clinics were opened using an innovative, volunteer-based model of service. There are doctors, nurses, and other paid staff and a large pool of volunteer physicians and dentists. In total, as many as 10,000 people are assisted each year.

While a number of the volunteers in  San Mateo County, such as the doctors and dentists are retired, many are still practicing. All of the medical professionals are highly motivated to serve their community in their limited spare time.

At either or both of the community clinics, available services include, but are not limited to, Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, Gynecology, Breast Cancer Screenings, Nutritional Counseling, Orthopedics, Dermatology, Diabetic Care, Neurology, Dental Check ups, and more. There is also information on senior health insurance program.

Samaritan House also arranged dental care. This is done with the support of a dentist and the support of a small paid staff and numerous volunteers. The clinic has expanded over the years. The dentists provide low-income families with free, professional dental services, including cleanings, fluoride, extractions, fillings, and root canals.

Shelter and job centers

The primary mission of Samaritan House Safe Harbor is to provide the homeless with safety, shelter, warmth, sustenance, and free health-care. After these basic human needs have been met and formerly homeless clients have been stabilized, Safe Harbor endeavors to help clients raise their level of self-sufficiency and transition to a more stable housing situation.

Samaritan House offers substance employment counseling, abuse advice and provides job search assistance in California. Safe Harbor also employs case workers who help clients design a personal strategy to overcome homelessness. Many people find employment while staying at the shelter thanks to these services.

Sam Trans, the county bus service, generously donates bus passes for travel in San Mateo County. This is a resource for Safe Harbor clients each day. These free bus passes allow Safe Harbor clients to reach their place of work or to visit potential employers.

 

 

 

 

Funded by government grants from the City of San Mateo and managed by Samaritan House, the Worker Resource Center meets employment needs. The location has served as a safe alternative location for temporary laborers and employers who need workers to come together. Workers and employers are encouraged to visit the Center at 400 E. 5th Avenue in San Mateo.
