What the Salvation Army Offers Across Montana

Montana is one of the biggest states in the country and one of the most sparsely served by the Salvation Army. A small number of corps locations cover terrain that spans from the Billings plains to the Flathead Valley — meaning some Montana residents live an hour or more from the nearest location. That's the reality this page starts from. What those six locations do offer, though, covers real ground: emergency help with rent and utility bills, food assistance, wildfire and flood disaster response, seasonal programs for kids, senior outreach, and a motorist emergency program that doesn't exist anywhere else in the country. Those are explained below.

A note on how Montana is organized: The state is covered by two separate Salvation Army divisions under the Western USA Territory, and they don't always share programs or administrative resources. Southern Montana — including Billings, Bozeman, Helena, and Great Falls — falls under the Intermountain Division, headquartered in Denver. Northern and Western Montana — including Missoula and Kalispell — falls under the Northwest Division, based in Seattle. If you're looking for statewide program information, you may need to check both.

Emergency help with rent, utilities, and bills

When a shutoff notice or eviction filing arrives, contacting your nearest SA corps is worth doing quickly. Most Montana locations can provide limited one-time emergency financial assistance for rent or utility costs — payment goes directly to the landlord or utility provider, not to you as cash. This is emergency help for a specific crisis, not a recurring monthly program, and funding at each location can vary week to week.

Call before going in. Ask whether the location currently has funds available for the type of help you need, and ask what documents to bring.

When you apply, bring: a current photo ID, proof of household income from the past 30 days, and copies of the specific bill, shutoff notice, or eviction paperwork you're seeking help with. A case worker will review your situation and explain what's currently available.

Food assistance - year round and seasonal food or meals

Most Montana corps run food pantries distributing groceries to qualifying households, and some serve prepared meals as well. What's available — hours, how often you can come, what to bring — varies by location, so call ahead before your first visit. The Missoula corps additionally operates a hygiene center with laundry facilities and free meals, which serves individuals experiencing homelessness or housing instability beyond what a standard pantry visit covers. To look for other options for food, see the Montana food bank and pantry list.

Holiday food boxes around Thanksgiving and Christmas are available at many locations — separate from regular pantry operations. Contact your local corps in the fall to ask what's being offered that year.

Disaster response — wildfires and floods

Montana's wildfire seasons and periodic flooding make disaster relief a meaningful part of what the SA does in this state. When the governor declares a disaster — whether a wildfire in the western forests, a flood along a river corridor, or a severe weather event — the Salvation Army activates mobile canteen and meal distribution operations, deploys to relief staging areas, and coordinates with local emergency management. This is a response function, not something you register for in advance; if disaster hits your area, the SA will be part of the response.

Montana Stranded Motorist Assistance Program

This program doesn't exist in most states. The Salvation Army partnered with the Montana Highway Patrol to give troopers the ability to issue vouchers to stranded motorists for towing and lodging costs. If a trooper encounters you broken down on the side of the road and determines you need assistance, they can provide a voucher on the spot — no prior enrollment or application required.

The program launched initially in eastern and southwest Montana, covering the Butte, Bozeman, and Billings areas, with additional regions being added. It applies to Montana residents and visitors alike. A similar program runs in Wyoming; Montana is only the second state to implement it.

Seasonal programs — apply early

Angel Tree registration for Christmas gifts and clothing for children in qualifying households opens in September or October at most locations. Families who wait until late November typically find it closed. When you register, bring a photo ID, birth records or Social Security cards for each child, proof of household income, and clothing and shoe sizes.

Back-to-school supply programs run at Montana corps locations in late summer. The Intermountain Division also runs a Pack a Backpack drive in partnership with local businesses each year — contact your local corps in July to ask what's available in your area and whether supplies are being distributed directly or through a drive event.

Senior programs and League of Mercy

The Salvation Army's League of Mercy — also called Community Care Ministries — is a volunteer visitation program that provides companionship, check-ins, and practical support for elderly and homebound residents who would otherwise have little contact with the outside world. This is particularly relevant in rural Montana, where geographic isolation compounds the usual challenges of aging. Some locations also offer home-delivered meals and help arranging transportation to medical appointments. What's available depends on the specific corps and its volunteers; contact your local location to ask what they're currently running.
