Rensselaer, Columbia, Greene New York Salvation Army assistance programs.

Salvation Army resources can help families that are facing a crisis. The organization will try to satisfy basic needs for the low income and struggling in the region, including the counties of Columbia, Rensselaer, and other nearby towns in New York. While all programs are limited in scope, the agency will do their best to help those that are struggling.

Much of the financial aid is part of their Family Services department. The goal is to reach out to the less fortunate and help people in their time of hardship. Among other things, this will give them help for satisfying their needs today and hope for tomorrow.

Some basic needs can bet met by the Salvation Army. This can include the following.
-Free emergency food boxes containing groceries and perishable goods.
-School supplies, such as notebooks, coats, and pens.
-Holiday programs which can be free Christmas toys for kids (seasonal) as well as Thanksgiving and Christmas meals.
-Financial Aid for paying bills, rent, and housing costs. See more details below.
-Additional immediate-needs assistance, often in partnership with other charities in Rensselaer.

Financial assistance is limited. It will come with a strict application process. only a small number of applications are approved, and it may include funds for paying rent, security deposits, medicine, utilities and transportation costs. Priority is for those with an eviction or disconnection notice.

Help for the holidays is available. Family Service works with local businesses and others in the community to help children and the elderly at Christmas time and other key holidays. The Salvation Army may have  Christmas and Thanksgiving Meals or Toys. Other goods can include free Holiday Food Boxes.

Volunteers from the agency will also distribute gifts to shut-ins in nursing homes and hospitals. There are various shelters in the region that are open for free, sit-down dinners that are hot and healthy. The Salvation Army endeavors to bring light and love to those it serves.

 

 

 

Emergency Food Programs are coordinated by the Salvation Army in eastern New York. The center provides hot meals year-round in Troy New York, Rensselaer County, and nearby regions. They are for anyone in need at are offered local Family Service and Worship Centers. This is in addition to the holiday meals which are always being served too.

Utility Bill Assistance / Fuel Counseling is one part of the Salvation Army and their financial aid programs. As resources allow, some money may be available for heating bills, with a focus on the seniors or sick in the community.

Job Counseling, including Resume Assistance and employment Transition Classes will help people overcome any barriers. Case managers from the Salvation Army work to help get people employed in the greater Troy New York region

Thrift Stores and Clothing Assistance from the Salvation Army includes clothing and household items at greatly reduced cost. The thrift stores are open to the public. When funding is available, the Salvation Army also offers free clothing vouchers for adults coping with extreme financial need or disasters. This can also be vouchers for household items.

Housing solutions are available from shelters and transitional housing programs. Some are located at churches or other charities in Greene or Rensselaer. Guests of the shelter units will also be able to avail themselves of case management services and related support.

 

 

 

In addition to above, ongoing life skills training is an ongoing part of the housing programs. Case workers support those in need including offer budgeting, GED completion, self-esteem classes, anger management, coping skills, and job placement with employers or volunteer sites. In many cases, low cost child care is provided while people are working.
