How to Save Money

Salvation Army financial assistance programs Polk and Marion County.

The non-profit organization started operating in Salem Oregon and the region many years ago, and the Salvation Army provides food, shelter, basic needs, and limited financial assistance as well. Locations operate across Polk and Marion Counties, and thousands of people benefit from this yearly.

The Salvation Army will try to help meet human needs of all people, regardless of religion, without discrimination to gender or race, etc. Case workers try to meet the needs of the whole person including the emotional, financial, physical, and spiritual. In past years, the Salvation Army of Marion and Polk County Oregon provided over 27,000 nights of housing, served over 70,000 meals, and assisted over 30,000 families in one capacity or another.

One of the main financial assistance and social service programs is known as Family Services. This resource can reach out to the less fortunate and help them meet their needs. It offers immediate, short term help and longer term stability and self-sufficiency. The Family Services program provides many forms of assistance to the needy.

This includes emergency food boxes and holiday meals. Seasonal items and support includes school supplies, winter coats, and free Christmas toys for kids. Case management is also provided.

Financial Assistance may be offered in the greater Polk County region. While it is limited, some of the possible forms of financial and cash assistance may include, but is not limited to, rental and security deposit, utilities, prescription medicine, heating bills, and transportation. The best number to dial to learn more or to apply is (503) 585-6688. You can inquire about food boxes or other emergency services.

The Lighthouse Lodge Transitional Shelter of Marion and Polk County can provide up to 6-months of shelter and really short term, temporary housing for lower income individuals and families. The Salvation Army and their case workers are involved in rescuing people from homelessness and offering the less fortunate the opportunity to get back on their feet. The Lighthouse Lodge Transitional Shelter offers some or all of the following. Dozens of beds for women and children. Case management services, including life skills classes such as budgeting and credit repair. Spiritual services and a public dinner is offered too.

Holiday and Christmas assistance is offered by the Salvation Army, and staff and volunteers work hard to help ensure that there will be a good Christmas for those in need in the Mid-Willamette Valley. Christmas Kettles, Angel tree, and Adopt a Family are all offered.

The services and programs are available throughout the Oregon winter months. For many families their need for help increases during the winter due to higher expenses, such as heating bills, holiday gifts, food, and clothing. So demands to The Salvation Army for help increase during the winter months.

Ring the Bell for the Holidays and the red kettle is always in need of volunteers, even if you can only contribute a few hours here and there. All donations go to helping the less fortunate pay their bills, and provide for holiday assistance. Kettles are placed throughout a number of places in Marion and Polk County communities.

The money and donations raised through this annual effort are used throughout the year to provide a helping hand to lower income and senior members of our community. The Salvation Army also offers social service and emergency programs such as a free food bank, financial assistance, and Lighthouse Shelter, as well as self-sufficiency services.
