SVDP assistance programs in Bangor and Penobscot County

St. Vincent de Paul has a church in Bangor that provides assistance in Penobscot County. Based on donations, get everything from new sneakers to apply for funds to pay bills, rent or heating costs.  SVDP also operates a Ministry, thrift store, and provides free Christmas toys or gifts from a Giving Tree.

While donations and volunteers at St. Paul the Apostle Parish (which is the SVDP location) help the low income, elderly, immigrants and jobless among others, they do have limited resources. This is in particular the financial assistance for housing or heating bills. Learn more below.

Free or low cost items from Saint Vincent in Bangor

Personal needs can be met by some of the Penobscot County St. Vincent de Paul programs. In some cases, an individual is given free stuff. This may be for a very low income family. Other free items may be given to the sick, elderly, disabled, or children during Christmas or Back to School. The names of these programs include the following. There are:

-Back to school supplies.
-Adopt a Family at Christmas as well as the Bangor SVDP Christmas Giving Trees.
-Free clothing bank.
-Work clothes, including boots, pants, dresses, suits, and more.
-A sneaker drive is in effect, known as the My New Shoes drive.
-Free food including Operation Rice Bowl.

Some personal needs will be provided at a low cost. This will be met by the thrift store. Note that the address of those SVDP resource is 54 Cumberland Street, Bangor Maine. Anyone can shop there. It sells furniture, appliances, beds, mattresses, and many other items. Of course clothes are sold there too. Note anyone using this store will need to pay for what they buy...but it can still help them save money.

The money raised from the sale of goods at the St. Paul the Apostle Parish Church is used to keep the Society assistance programs running. The money can also go to pay parish expenses or help the less fortunate in the Bangor Maine region pay their bills.

Assistance for bills from Bangor SVDP

Energy bill help is available, with a focus on winter heating costs including propane, oil, and electricity. Most of the financial aid that is disbursed is funded through the voluntary contributions of businesses and customers of the various utility companies in Maine. Society of Saint Vincent may also have some of their own monies available as well. Or read more on Maine utility bill assistance programs.

The non-profit organization processes applications for water, electric, and heating bill help. They distribute funds to qualified, low-income households in their service area. The financial aid is only for people who are in jeopardy of having their power disconnected for non-payment due to some exceptional circumstance and not due to due chronic financial distress that they have created.

There may be other financial help given to some people too by the parish, as the result of donations. This ranges from rent to boxes of food, bus vouchers, money for rent, and more. Anyone that needs help needs to apply. Then St. Vincent de Paul in Bangor contacts pre-qualified customers to set appointments to complete the assistance process. The process is time consuming to say the least.

The thrift store (attic) is open yearly as well as the food, clothing programs and other resources. The main address is 217 York Street, Bangor, Maine 04401. Dial (207) 217-6740.
