Free fans and air conditioners in Omaha area.

Low-income families in Omaha Nebraska with a focus on seniors or people with a disability, can get a free air conditioner or window fan. The main programs are the Omaha Summer Fan Program as well as state of Nebraska LIHEAP, both of which help deal with summer heat. Find details on a free air conditioner or fan in the Omaha area.

Details on free air conditioner programs in Omaha

The LIHEAP summer crisis program is one option for a free air conditioner in Omaha. There are also emergency repairs as well as possible AC units from weatherization. Both of these are federally funded but applications are available in local communities, including community action agencies in Omaha that offer applications.

Free air conditioner units from LIHEAP are for very low-income families, with many of them living in or close to poverty levels. In general, there is also priority for senior citizens over the age of 60 in Omaha as well as those with a disability or young child at home. While the AC unit may be given directly, in some cases LIHEAP will provide cash, or a voucher, to pay for one.

Weatherization is also sometimes an option as well, but this will focus on fixing an air conditioner. For example, if a unit break down in the summer, community action will provide repairs. Or if the unit can’t be fixed, LIHEAP may be combined with weatherization to give extra support to repair the air conditioner or give out a new, gently used one.

Omaha residents can also turn to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) as well as their local Office on Aging office, as both of them partner with the government to either (1) provide financial help to pay electric bills during the summer or (2) give out a free air conditioner. They are part of the general cooling assistance programs that are available in the entire region, including Douglas County, Omaha and others. Help getting a fan from the Omaha Salvation Army

The Omaha Summer Fan Program has been distributing free fans to elderly, senior citizens, ill or disabled residents of Omaha Nebraska for decades. While the program does rely on donations and money raised by the Salvation Army, in most years over 1,000 fans are distributed. There are free window fans or other units thanks to the generosity of people and businesses across the Omaha Nebraska community.

It will normally run from June to September of each year. This free fan program is critical to many Omaha families because summer heat can pose dangerous health consequences and conditions for people who are most at risk. This can include the sick, elderly, or disabled.

Fans are offered free of charge to qualified individuals and families. Also, when you stop by, learn about other social services and financial assistance programs the Salvation Army either administers or has information on. Priority for the fans, and most other aid, is given to people with medical disabilities and also to those who are 50 years of age or older. Proof of medical disability or age will be required when applying for a fan. Or if someone applies for other social services or emergency help, then appropriate documentation will be needed for that application too.

Donations are always needed to by the Omaha Salvation Army. Or if you want to contribute cash, then monetary donations to purchase new fans are also needed. All funds are used strictly for the program and not administrative costs and find details on Salvation Army Omaha utility assistance.
