Assistance programs from Cleveland and Canadian County Salvation Army.

Social services administered by the Salvation Army in Cleveland and Canadian County can help low income families, senior citizens, and others who are struggling in the region. The organization offers a wide range of assistance programs, including rent, utilities, food, and other resources. There are also free items such as school supplies or uniforms for kids as well as Christmas gifts, meals, or Thanksgiving turkey dinners.

The Salvation Army combines the help with case management services, including around employment and financial literacy in the Cleavland County area. The resources are for the less fortunate and additional details on their offerings are below.

Most of the applications and intake occur at regional social service offices. The applicant will need to meet with a case worker to review their options and any available programs.

Almost all clients will be signed up for case management in addition to any direct support that is available. The Salvation Army also has many partnerships with other regional and national community agencies, such as the United Way. The various social service programs provide thousands of grocery orders per year to families. Dozens of families are supported with utility bill assistance and also nights of shelter. Social workers help clients address their unique needs and can help them move towards self-sufficiency and help clients meet their long term personal and financial goals.

Regional senior centers may have recreational activities, medical clinics, and even lunches for elderly members of the community. The locations will also usually arrange workshops and classes such as  educational speakers, field trips, and social events. Volunteers and staff may provide local transportation to areas in Cleveland County, such as a store or doctor office. The Salvation Army will even offer shopping trips.

The Senior Citizen Transportation Program may coordinate low cost (or free) round trip transportation services to senior centers, congregate meal sites, or health care facilities in Norman. The homebound may also receive meal and grocery deliveries if someone is unable to leave their home.

With the hot Oklahoma summers, the Salvation Army will try to provide a free summer fan to qualified people in the area, including Cleveland County. The primary goal is to prevent the humidity and heat-related deaths that scorching temperatures can bring on. Fans are offered for elderly citizens, infants or residents with a serious medical condition. Qualifications include families must have an infants under 6 months of age, the home has a senior citizen age 62 and older, or it is for the disabled or someone with a chronic medical condition.

Shelters and lodge's are open to any woman or man who needs a clean, warm, safe place to stay for a night or so. Residents can also usually get a meal as well. For the homeless family, child or individual who has run out of hope and options, your local Salvation Army center is a source of free emergency food, counseling, shelter and general support. They are there to offer a hand to the struggling.

Other social services available are as follows. Free food, groceries, utility bill assistance, and the non-profit also offers special seasonal needs, such as free school supplies or coats during cold weather. They also offer disaster relief services and coordination. Any support is short term in nature and there needs to be a defined period covered.

Without short term assistance from Oklahoma Salvation Army Social Service Programs, the working poor, low-income families, disabled individuals and seniors may often need to decide between paying their home energy bills or affording other basic necessities such as prescription drugs, medical care, housing costs and healthy food.

Thanksgiving, Christmas and other holiday programs are available in the Norman region, including the Thanksgiving Brunch and special meals. Hundreds of lower income and economically disadvantaged or lonely citizens in the Cleveland and Canadian area can get a free meal. It comes with all the toppings. As part of these activities the Salvation Army will also try to provide the children from these families with some type of gift or toy.

Another key holiday program is Angel Tree. This provides a variety of assistance for families with children under the age of 14. A senior tree is also offered for residents age 62 and older. People from the community will need to volunteer to buy an item for the names on the tree, so it relies on the generosity of families, non-profits, and business from the community.
