Assistance programs from Metro Lutheran Ministry.

Emergency assistance for families is offered from the Metro Lutheran Ministry Community Care program. The Kansas City Missouri charity organization can help the less fortunate and people facing a crisis situation.

Clients who turn to the agency tend to be faced with poverty, unemployment, chronic dependence, and unexpected crises. So while the ministry may be able to help with an immediate need, they know this is not a long term solution and will try to direct clients to other resources.

Metro Lutheran Ministry Community Care Services

Emergency assistance from MLM is available in a few different counties in the Kansas City Metropolitan area. Support is for people in Jackson, Wyandotte and Clay Counties Missouri. The agency can offer food to feed the hungry, limited financial support, provide free articles of clothing, fans during the summer's heat and also blankets for the cold weather.

Housing, including eviction prevention, from Community Care assists families by helping them pay the rent, keeps lights on, aid to keep their houses warm and roofs over their heads. When possible the ministry will offer assistance for paying utility bills and housing costs, such as security deposits, rent, mortgages, and other needs.

Beyond just offering this short term, emergency assistance, Community Care helps low income and struggling families move into programs and social services that address the underlying problems of poverty. This can include education, job counseling and case management. All of this support can help families get off government benefits and break dependency cycles. The agency can help them manage limited resources and to find their place in the community. Community Care centers are as follows.

Holiday assistance from Metro Lutheran Ministry (MLM) includes a Christmas Store. This will bring Holiday joy and happiness to families that are struggling and that have children. The assistance will make Christmas possible for literally hundreds of Kansas City families. Children may receive gifts, toys, presents, free meals, and more from MLM.

 

 

 

A Christmas Store is operated by volunteers and fund raisers/donations from the community. Volunteers and local businesses give gifts and toys to thousands of disadvantaged families every year. The Christmas Stores provides people with gifts, toys, bibles, free blankets and hot meals. The location may be the largest gift giving and holiday program in the greater Kansas City area. Bethany Lutheran Church is also a key partner. Application processing occurs at St. Mark's Lutheran Church and families will be screened.

Holiday assistance is also for the homebound and seniors. Volunteers deliver gifts, toys, and meals to their homes. Please do contribute or donate to these or other services if possible.

The MLM Older Adult Services helps people with physical and mental disabilities as well as senior citizens. The staff from Lutheran Ministry help clients to resolve the immediate issues that brought them to ask for assistance in the first place.

Case Management services will assists clients to reach goals concerning their health, housing and income. As part of this, financial assistance may be distributed for paying utility or heating bills, rent or even a partial mortgage payment. Food assistance and vouchers provide them with much needed nutritional support and supplemental meals. As part of case management, volunteers and staff also visit clients in their homes, providing counseling and acting as advocates.

Most of the requests for assistance has been concentrated in areas such as food; home repair; medication assistance; utility assistance; consumer items; home companionship and assistance and miscellaneous referrals. Metro Lutheran Ministry also works with Meals-on-Wheels, coordinates relocation assistance, and even home gardening for seniors.

 

 

 

 

Homebound seniors and the elderly in Kansas City are also connected with companions and volunteers for regular home visits. It will bring them companionship and may also break their social isolation.

Minor Home Repair is coordinated by a group of volunteers who spend time each week doing security and safety repairs in homes of people with disabilities and also low income seniors.

Permanent Supportive Housing and Apartments in Wyandotte and Jackson County are managed by MLM. The units are for homeless individuals with disabilities. The housing units are known as Luther Johnson Homes, Grace Homes, and also the Project CARE Permanent Housing. Residents of the apartments will also be exposed to case management services which will assist clients with empowerment, self-care, socialization and help in reaching individual goals.
