How to Save Money

Salvation Army emergency assistance programs McDonough and Henry County.

In an effort to help the working poor and less fortunate, the Henry County Georgia Salvation Army raises money from the sale of goods at its thrift/family store. Struggling families and the working poor may get help with rent, free food, seasonal items like free school supplies or Christmas gifts too. The McDonough also helps with drug and substance abuse among other social services.

In addition to those funds, there may also be grants allocated to the local center from the United Way as well as federal government programs, such as EFSP – Emergency Food and Shelter. Using these resources there may be help provided to a small number of qualified families in Henry County.

Appointments are needed when applying, specifically for resources such as rent assistance, prescription medication vouchers, or energy bill help. The food pantry is a little more available from the Salvation Army, and of course anyone can use the thrift store for purchasing discounted clothing, toys, electronics, and more. Note that when applying for Henry County Salvation Army seasonal programs, such as free school supplies or the Christmas Angel Tree program, applications are needed weeks before the holiday in question.

Assistance for bills, food, and housing

Housing solutions from the Salvation Army in Henry County range from overnight shelters to transitional housing. Often these programs are available as the result of partnerships with group such as the Rescue Mission or churches. The shelters can get the person off the streets for a short period of time while they stabilize. There are also short term housing for veterans, women, and children.

In rare cases the housing assistance from the McDonough Salvation Army may include financial help. In these instances, when funding allows, there may be a few dollars for paying expenses such as rent, water bills, or heating costs. When applying, the person needs a source of stable income, they need to be out of options, and also contribute to the costs.

The Salvation Army also works with the client to solve the root cause of their hardship. Many people need new job skills, or they need help on budgeting. Others lack affordable transportation or need an affordable car to get to work in Henry County. No matter the need, whether it is for transportation, money management skills, or something else the center may help. In addition, find other sources of free automobile programs.

In an effort to provide free seasonal services, the McDonough and Henry County Salvation Army uses outreach with the local community. There will be annual calls for school supplies, clothing, Christmas toys, and other goods. For parents with kids and seniors that are struggling during the holidays, they can apply for some or all of the following. The options include back to school supplies, Adopt a Family at Christmas, Thanksgiving meals, and many others.
