Free air conditioners in Louisville KY area.

Free air conditioner units or box fans are offered in the Louisville Kentucky area, including in Jefferson County. There are some programs that will loan out an AC unit for the summer and other organizations that will just provide a free window fan or air conditioner. Find details on the free AC programs in the region.

The priority is to help senior citizens, the disabled, and people with a medical condition (as verified by a doctor) get priority. The primary programs in the Louisville Kentucky area range from Project Warm to LIHEAP summer cooling subsidies and free portable air conditioners from the Louisville Aging and Disabled office.

Programs in Louisville and Jefferson County for free air conditioners

Two of the three programs (Project Warm and the Aging Center) rely on donations from the public, which means that resources vary. The other, the Kentucky LIHEAP summer subsidy, if income based and part of the federal government benefits for low-income families.

The Louisville Aging and Disabled office (and the programs they offer) help senior citizens over the age of 60 (regardless of their income) and disabled people. A number of resources are available, however starting around May 1 of each year the non-profit works to provide a free air conditioner to the elderly or disabled. They will generally be small units and this program relies on donations. The center is based at 701 W Ormsby Ave, Louisville, KY 40203. For information on these or other programs, dial (502) 574-5092

Free air conditioners are also offered from Project WARM. This will be a loan program and it is focused on people with a medical issue and who are at risk from extreme summer heat or humidity. While the charity does try to loan out a small AC unit for free, in some cases a fan will be provided if there are not enough loaners available. The volunteer organization is based at 800 S Preston Street, Louisville, KY. Dial 502-636-9276.

Louisville Metro Department of Community Services offers free air conditioners are part of weatherization and the LIHEAP summer subsidy. This is an option for low-income families and those living in poverty that qualify for the year round grant service. Not only will a free air conditioner be offered, but it can also help fix a broken unit if needed.

This organization services as the community action agency for the region, and many other programs available can help the low-income pay summer electric bills or apply for AC units. Dial (502) 574-4377, or find other details on Louisville KY community action assistance programs.

There are other local charities and churches that may have free window fans or AC units for people facing a crisis. Or they offer financial help to pay for high summer electric bills. The Salvation Army in Jefferson County KY, local community ministries and the Louisville KY Neighborhood centers are all options. As with many other local programs, these charities also rely on donations from the community so resources will be limited.
