Little Dixie Community Action Agency programs.

Find help from the Little Dixie Community Action Agency. They are part of the nationwide network of non-profits and offer social services and emergency aid to the less fortunate, working poor, and struggling in the community.

Some of the main programs offered include housing counseling, resources for financial literacy, Head Start education and other referrals to financial support. The Little Dixie agency helps residents in Choctaw, McCurtain, and Pushmataha Counties.

The first time Homebuyer Education Program provided by the Little Dixie Community Action Agency has been in operation since the early 2000s. It promotes long-term and successful homeownership by providing ongoing counseling and training in regard to all aspects of the process of purchasing a home. Through the training and advice from the agency, current homeowners and potential homeowners in counties such as McCurtain and Pushmataha acquire skills required to sustain a home throughout the life of the mortgage.

The Homebuyer Education service area extends beyond the Tri-County region to include Bryan County as well, and offers classes free of charge to the public. The Little Dixie Community Action program is open to all, regardless of income level, credit scores or homeownership status. It is not required that you are seeking homeownership through Little Dixie CAA, or any other source, to participate in the Education Workshops and classes.

They can cover the following topics. Shopping for a Home, Pros as well as Cons of Homeownership, Dealing with Predatory Lending and mortgages, Understanding and improving Credit, Ways to Improve Credit Score, and Obtaining a Mortgage Loan.

Another helpful program offered to residents in the housing service area is the Little Dixie Community Action Agency’s residential loan program. As a First Mortgage Financer, the non-profit agency is certified to make mortgages for potential homebuyers. The loan terms (such as length, interest rates, origination fees, etc.) are consistent with those of local lending institutions, banks and mortgage companies. Little Dixie CAA also packages residential mortgages for participating lenders and also the USDA/Rural Development as a partner.

The various types of Residential Loans are offered for the purpose of purchasing a home. Or funds can be used to provide assistance with a down payment and closing costs, or for making improvements to an existing home, with a focus on seniors and the disabled.

While Little Dixie seeks to serve low-income individuals and families in Oklahoma, the services are not limited to those who meet low-income guidelines for borrowing money for activities that are eligible through the various resources.

For those that qualify, loan amounts range from one thousand to several thousand dollars, depending on type of mortgage, the applicant’s credit scores, collateral, and other factors. Little Dixie CAA’s programs also operate in partnership with USDA/Rural Development’s Section 502 and 504, Guaranteed Loan Programs, local banks, the non-profit NeighborWorks America, and participating lenders.

To further assist community residents with obtaining their homes or starting a business, other credit counseling and financial support is offered. They provide small business funding for start-up or expansion, or assistance with debt management or improving credit scores. All of this and more is available from Little Dixie Community Action Agency, including low cost or free credit counseling services. Such services are free and available to anyone, regardless of income.

Highly-trained and experienced credit counselors are available in each of the counties of their service area, such as Choctaw, McCurtain and Pushmataha. They tend to work one-on-one with clients.

Assistance and guidance is offered to help them learn to manage debt and resolve credit issues that can have a negative impact on securing capital for homeownership or business ventures. Counselors from the non-profit agency will help individuals develop a plan for resolving credit issues and reducing debts, including credit cards.

They will help people to continue working with clients throughout the process the duration of which can vary depending on each unique situation. Specific credit counseling services can include Working with Creditors and Negotiating Settlements, Personal Money Management, Improving Credit Score, and also overcoming Bad Credit scores.

Little Dixie Community Action Agency continues assisting low-income families and the poor in the region through Weatherization Assistance. Participating families in this federal funded program are able to permanently reduce their energy bills by making their homes more energy efficient.

Residents benefiting from Little Dixie’s weatherization services typically see their annual energy and heating bills reduced by an average of about $350, depending on fuel prices and other factors.

Due to the long-term nature of weatherization improvements, the savings accumulate over time. This means that they will lead to substantial benefits for the individual client. In addition to providing financial and environmental benefits, efficient weatherization from Little Dixie Community Action Agency contributes to improved health and safety for participating households, including seniors. Weatherization measures provided may include Heating Unit Repairs, extra insulation: for Attic, Floor, Walls, Water Heater, Exposed Pipes, Door and Window Repair or Replacement, CFL bulbs, and Weather Stripping and Caulking.

In addition to its services for homeowners, Little Dixie provides educational programming for area children. This is mostly from Head Start, one of the agency’s larger programs. This resource serves three and four-year-old children in schools throughout McCurtain, Choctaw and Pushmataha Counties. Children from lower income households with special needs are integrated into regular classrooms, with activities and services modified to meet all needs.

Head Start and Early Head Start programming encourages development. This takes place in all major areas, including emotional, social, physical, and cognitive. With the idea that children learn best through experience, Head Start emphasizes daily exposure to science, math, and language arts to increase school readiness. Parents of the child, staff, and community partners also benefit from this approach.

For those without access to affordable transportation, Little Dixie offers the Transit Program. The program is available to SoonerRide (Medicaid) clients and the general public in counties including Pushmataha, Choctaw, and McCurtain. Those not eligible for SoonerRide are invited to contact a transit office in their area for more information and support. The Transit Program also operates several Road-To-Work Routes in all multiple towns as well.

Little Dixie Community Action Agency is located at 209 North 4th Street, Hugo, Oklahoma 74743. Telephone number is 580-326-3351.
