Kings County and Hanford Salvation Army assistance programs.

Find free food pantries, holiday assistance, counseling, financial help as well as other social services at the Kings County California Salvation Army center. The christian church, faith based charity works to help the poor and impoverished (no matter their religion) regain stability. The Hanford center will offer some support on their own, and some of the assistance is available from referrals to local partners.

The Salvation Army is one of the nation’s as well as Kings County largest charity groups. They use volunteers to help the less fortunate and collect donations from the community, using both the Red Kettle and grants from groups such as the United Way. Funds are also raised from the sale of goods from the thrift store as well. All of these resources are pooled together to provide support to the needy.

Basic needs, food, shelter, and housing

Maybe first and foremost is the goal to provide the basic needs that people need. This includes everything from food to a place to live (housing) as well as medical needs. The Salvation Army in Kings County California tries to meet these needs using the following.

Hunger prevention is tackled from the food pantry as well as soup kitchen. Anyone in need can drop in for a free hot meal and/or box of non-perishable groceries. Donations as well as volunteers are always need to keep these two services running.

Housing and/or shelter ranges from funds for paying rent to prevent an eviction to utility or water bill assistance. There may also be referrals to local King County overnight shelter programs as well as transitional housing. The Salvation Army wants everyone to keep a roof over their heads.

The core basic needs for most people also cover their health. This can be expensive for almost everyone, no matter whether they are low income or seniors living on a pension. Therefore the church offers everything from vouchers for prescription medications to referrals to free community clinics.

Kings County case management

The Salvation Army does not just offer emergency help to anyone in need, but rather it is a hand up and not a hand out type approach. So there will not just be money given for rent or say gasoline for work without the client doing their part to get back on track. This is where case management comes into play.

The Kings County Salvation Army has case managers on site to work with clients. They will review all their sources of income (a job, unemployment, Cal-Works or Fresh, etc.), look at career skills, debt levels, and more. Then a plan will be put together to help the client overcome their situation. This requires full engagement/participation from the client as well; the Salvation Army will not assist people who are not willing to help themselves.
