Kern County California church assistance programs.

There are a number of churches that help the less fortunate in the Kern County region. Each has limited resources, but what residents may find includes free food or a hot meal, some clothes, emergency financial aid for rent or bills, sober living advice and so much more.

The churches offer assistance and are non- denominational. This means the support they offer is for people of all ages, races, religions, and backgrounds. There can be migrants who get food or shelter from a church, support for single moms, assistance for seniors or the homeless and anyone in need. Whether it is financial help, free food or vouchers, or something else, each Bakersfield as well as Kern County church tries to help to the best of its ability.

Free food and meals from churches

There are several that partner with the Kern County community action agency. The church in effect serves as the food distribution and application site for clients. There will be a pantry and/or soup kitchen on site at the church, and this is where they provide help from. Bakersfield Family Church is one example (phone number (661) 387-1778) that as meals. They are based at 106 Wilson Ave, Bakersfield, California 93308.

What may offer includes a free bag of groceries, both canned and fresh. There may be baby formula, ensure for seniors, and ethic food items for immigrants. Based on donations the pantries may have a large number of goods. The community action agency can also help the church pass out surplus USDA commodities in the Bakersfield area, such as bread, cheese, dairy, cereal, and similar goods. New Covenant PCG on 800 Airport Drive also is a free food distribution center. Phone 661-392-7232.

Kern County churches often have holiday assistance too. Of course, much of that is food and meals, including Easter baskets, Thanksgiving dinners or turkeys and Christmas meals. However, some of the parishes will also give small, free Christmas toys or gifts to kids as well. The holiday assistance is for seniors, widows, the homeless, new immigrants, working poor and anyone who needs some holiday joy.

Financial help from Bakersfield area churches

There are a few parishes or faith based charities that may offer financial help. This will generally be as a last resort and is very limited. The Kern County churches often collect donations from their members, and those funds may be given out to people or families in the immediate area of the church.

The main church that may offer one time, short term emergency financial assistance is St. Vincent de Paul. They offer many forms of financial help, ranging from rent to energy bills, prescription drugs, gasoline vouchers, car repairs with volunteer auto mechanics and more. Find details on assistance from Saint Vincent de Paul in Kern County. Christ Cathedral Church has a phone number of (661) 834-3311. This church location is a Community Action Partnership of Kern County free food distribution site as well as, on occasion, may have free generic drugs or information on assistance programs.

God's Storehouse at 16475 Highway 178 in Weldon is also a faith based charity to try for help. They can have referrals to financial help from other Kern County charities or government resources, including CalWorks or CalFresh.

Counseling, drug abuse help, and shelters from churches in Kern County

Several churches offer more so called social services. They can help migrant or farm workers acclimate. Or give free marriage counseling or coordinate drug or alcohol abuse assistance or homeless shelters. Some of these Kern County church “support” services will also combine financial aid too.
