Kennebec County Salvation Army assistance programs.

Covering the Capital Region and the city of Augusta, the Kennebec County Salvation Army provides social services to the less fortunate. This ranges from emergency utility bill or rent assistance to free food, back to school supplies, homeless shelters and Christmas toys. Other Salvation Army resources are offered too.

They not only provide general assistance, but also allow people to donate surplus items both year round and for the holidays. This includes goods at the Salvation Army Family Store to Red Kettle and Angel Tree. The Augusta Main center therefore both allows the less fortunate to get the help they need and they also provide individuals in Kennebec the ability to give back.

Salvation Army social services, free basic needs and financial help in Augusta region

Holiday assistance programs – There are two main ones available. They are as follows. Both rely on donations from the region.

  • -Thanksgiving food baskets (with a turkey and all the toppings) as well as a hot Thanksgiving day meal for the homeless and anyone that needs a place to go.
  • -Adopt a Family provides free toys at Christmas. There are also food boxes, clothes, presents for seniors, and visitations to nursing homes as well as hospitals.

The Salvation Army is also a key place for referrals. They are aware of the trustees in the various towns in Kennebec County, and those government entities may offer emergency financial help as well. Food pantry and thrift store – While these are part of the social services, they are more donation/volunteer driven and do not include financial aid. What may be available is as follows.

  • -The Salvation Army in Kennebec County food bank has groceries (both fresh and canned), meat, dairy, baby formula, and more.
  • -Thrift store is the second hand shop that sells items to the public. Whether it is furniture, small appliances, or other goods, the items sold are gently used and discounted.

Salvation Army disaster services – Both its own staff members and partners, such as the American Red Cross, can respond in a disaster.

  • -They bring clothing, can place people into shelters, and bring food or meals using a mobile canteen.
  • -Once the immediate crisis has been resolved, case managers help the disaster survivors get back on track. Locating housing, transportation, employments, and other recovery steps are taken.

 

 

 

 

Counseling, stabilization and self-sufficiency

Ministry, counseling, and stabilization – The Kennebec County Salvation Army supports students during the summer and after school, they help the unemployed, elderly, substance abusers and others. This allows the charity the ability to help the client help themselves.

  • -After school programs can allows kids a safe place to go, where they can meet with a tutor, get a snack, and other support.
  • -Case managers from the Salvation Army help clients fight, and ideally exit, a cycle of poverty.
  • -Mens and Women ministries are held one day per week in the Capital Region, and this give guidance to the less fortunate.

Volunteer and donations – This is the bread and butter of the Salvation Army. The charity relies on the generosity of the community to keep running.
