Charleston South Carolina free or low cost activities.

Charleston South Carolina simply oozes southern charm. Its rich history, remarkable architecture, and beautiful beaches attract visitors from around the globe. It can be costly to visit, even as a smaller city, so we have a list of free activities (or low cost one) for you and your family to participate in. The area is so nice that Charleston consistently tops the list of the best places to visit in the United States. The whole family can have fun in Charleston--even if you're on a tight budget. Check out our list of the best free things to do while you're in this fantastic city:

1. Waterfront Park
As its name suggests, this beautiful park is located right along Charleston Harbor. The wharf is a great place for boat-watching, and if you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of a dolphin as well as other ocean or sea life for free. It is a great alternative to a costly dolphin tour. Quaint bench swings invite the whole family to slow down and take a relaxing break while watching the sparkling water.

The kids' favorite part of Waterfront Park is sure to be the super cool splash pad and Pineapple Fountain. Be sure to bring a change of clothes or make this your last stop for the day, because once the kids see that water, they won't want to leave before they're drenched!

2. Charleston Hat Man
Kids will get a kick out of this life-sized painting of a man made of hats! The painting was originally created in the late 1800's as an advertisement for a local haberdashery. Stop at the corner of Church and Broad to see if your family can find all 16 hats used to create this iconic piece of art.

3. The Big Red Barn
Palmetto Carriage Works offers tours of the city in horse-drawn carriages. The tours are a bit pricey, especially for a low to moderate income family, but the Big Red Barn (which houses the carriage company's animals) is free to visit. Kids and animal lovers can spend the afternoon visiting the horses, goats, and chickens. If they ask nicely, the kiddos may even be able to pet some of these adorable critters.

4. Sullivan's Island
If you want to plan a family beach day, look no further than Sullivan's Island. You'll have to take a short drive (10 miles) to get there, but it's definitely worth it. The gorgeous little island is the perfect place to splash around in the waves or take a hike and see the sights. Or go for a free, long walk on the beach and soak in the atmosphere. The lighthouse is an excellent photo spot. Also referred to as "Charleston Light", the Sullivan's Island lighthouse boasts a modern, unique triangular shape.

While you're spending the day at Sullivan's Island, you'll want to visit Fort Moultrie. The fort has played an important role in many U.S. battles, from the Revolutionary War through WWII.

5. Arthur Ravenel Bridge
Take the family for a stroll across the stunning Arthur Ravenel Bridge. The pedestrian lane on the impressive, cable-stayed bridge offers incredible views of the Cooper River. The evening view of the bridge and surrounding water is exceptionally gorgeous, with the dazzling lights reflecting off the water's surface.

6. The Citadel
The Citadel is a military college set on a magnificent campus studded with notable buildings that have a medieval flair. There is no entry fee, which is great news for anyone living on a budgeting and that is looking to save money. Explore this beautiful spot along the Ashley River and make it a point to stop at the Summerall Chapel, a breathtaking building that also happens to be the site of many magical weddings. Don't miss the Citadel Parade, which is held on Friday afternoons during the school year.

7. Lower King Street
King Street is one of Charleston's oldest streets, boasting delightful historical architecture and tons of interesting shops. If you plan to spend a little time window shopping, this is definitely the spot. As it cab be expensive to shop on King Street (as anywhere), and the cost can add up quickly for anyone living on a budget. Window shopping is always free to do!

Lower King Street is home to some of the best antique stores in the world, according to Travel and Leisure magazine. Browsing through unique items in an antique store can be fun for the whole family. Encourage the kiddos to imagine the intriguing story behind precious heirlooms. You might even find a rare treasure that you simply can't leave behind!

8. White Point Garden
Bursting with southern charm, this park is filled with massive oaks, mysterious Spanish moss, gorgeous flowers, and an iconic gazebo. The park is an enchanting place, with its gently bubbling fountains, historical monuments, and military relics. Children would love visiting and playing there!

9. Battery Carriage House Inn
This historic location is found right across the street from White Point Garden. You don't have to be a guest at the inn to take a stroll through the charming gardens--but you do have to be brave! After all, the inn is known as one of the most haunted places in Charleston. Take your family on an impromptu ghost hunt--you just might catch a glimpse of "The Headless Torso" or "The Gentleman Ghost".

10. The Charleston Farmer's Market
If you're visiting Charleston anytime between April and December, you'll definitely want to stop by the Farmer's Market. The market is open from 8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays in Marion Square and there is no cost to walk it.  It is a free and great way to brose and “window shop”.

The square is full of tasty, fresh-grown produce from local farmers and numerous talented food vendors offering tasty treats that would be perfect for a family picnic! While you might spend a little money here stocking your picnic basket for lunch, there are plenty of free samples and free entertainment to make this stop worth your time.

The city of Charleston is an enchanting place. This charming, seaside town in South Carolina offers visitors a glimpse into the history of our beloved country while also providing entertaining attractions and striking scenery. It's a great vacation destination for families of all income levels, with plenty of low cost as well as free exciting activities that won't break the bank.
